1. When people say “New York is for fashion or bankers…” – just believe that!
Yes, that’s a big truth. Probably a lot of people you will meet at a club or anywhere will say: “I work with fashion” or “I work with investment banking”, I feel like it happened with me at least 10 times since I moved.
2. Depend where you are walking, it just feels like Fashion Week
If you go to SoHo on Sundays there will be a lot of well-dressed people everywhere, and lots of girls with perfect bohemian taste. If you go to Meatpacking district at night, you will probably bump with a lot of stylish people too.
3. People here are really fashionable or really comfortable
I realized that New Yorkers can be really comfortable, like wearing sneakers and comfy clothes or they just look like out of a magazine photoshoot. Even moms taking care of 3 children can be really stylish and perfectly walk in high heels.
4. If you go to a library, bookstore or look the magazines, you probably will wish never stop reading.
Yes, actually that’s a really big problem for me right now; I am always lost on time when I decide to read something. There are so many options everywhere: Vogue, Elle, Vanity Fair, Teen Vogue… And the books are to die for too! Try to take a look at Taschen books and you will be amazed.
5. The stores: yeah, get ready to spend Money you actually don’t have – since we are only college students
I swear that I can easily exchange clothes for dinner. I wish I was kidding, but If I have 50 dollars to eat in a restaurant with friends or to buy a new dress… Guess what? No dinner for me!
6. You can find really cheap places with nice clothes
Different from Brazil – from my point of view- the sale time here is really good, and it seems that it always has something good on sale. Another thing I can’t forget to mention is the Buffalo Exchange stores… If you come to NYC just go to this place and you will understand what I am talking about.
7. If you want to go out wearing crazy clothes, just do that
Different from my country, nobody will stare if you are wearing bear pijamas with fancy Louboutin shoes and have pink hair. You can leave your house wearing what you want every day, so be creative and take some risks!
8. The fast fashions stores here are really fast on bringing trends for the costumers
I don’t know how they make that, but, if you see something at Vogue in one week, you will probably find It really soon on H&M, Forever 21, Topshop… and the list keep going on!
9. This city has a avenue called Fashion Avenue
I have to tell more? The 7th Avenue is called Fashion Avenue and there’s a lot of cool things reated to fashion there: The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) has a really good and free museum inside!
10. Fashion is actually really important here
The industry of fashion here is really big and serious. The museums here are always making exhibits related to fashion, like the last one “China: Through the Looking Glass” at Metropolitan Museum of Art – It was one of the most popular exhibits they made until now. And there’s Fashion Week too. Do I have to say more? I just feel that in Brazil fashion is valorized but not that much when I compare with NYC!
