8 Reasons Why “The Good Place” Is Worth Watching

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Casper Libero chapter.

The Good Place is one of these TV series that is hidden into Netflix’s catalog. Not only does it star one of the greatest actress of all times — Kristen Bell —, but it also offers up a genuinely intriguing premise: what happens if you end up in “the good place” when you die, but you really aren’t meant to be there?

The TV series focuses on Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell), a woman who wakes up in the afterlife and is introduced by Michael (Ted Danson) to “The Good Place”, a Heaven-like utopia he designed, in reward for her righteous life. She realizes that she was sent there by mistake and must hide her morally imperfect behavior and try to become a better person.

William Jackson Harper, Jameela Jamil and Manny Jacinto co-star as other residents of the “Good Place”, together with D’Arcy Carden as Janet, an artificial – and super funny – being who helps the inhabitants.

The TV series has an awesome cast, is really fun and has A LOT of plot twists. Do you still have doubts about watching the TV series or not? Check out a list with 8 reasons that proves that The Good Place is worth watching!

Why To Watch The Good Place?

#1 Kristen Bell is in the main cast (and she is the ideal anti-heroine)

Kristen Bell is one of our favorite actress of all time – and she plays the ideal anti-heroine of the story. At the TV series, Bell is Eleanor Shellstrop, a recently deceased and less-than-compassionate person who finds herself spending the after life in the Good Place. It quickly becomes apparent, though, that Eleanor doesn’t belong in the Good Place — not because we’re judging her, but because she’s immediately made aware of a clerical error that confused her with another Eleanor Shellstrop. Weird, huh?

#2 Get ready to fall in love with Jameela Jamil

Jameela Jamil is gorgeous, tall and has an amazing British accent. At The Good Place, she plays Tahani Al-Jamil, a deceased, wealthy philanthropist who traveled extensively around the world. The character was born in Pakistan, raised in England, and went to school in France – oh la la. Tahani, whose full name means “Congratulations Beautiful,” is a seemingly-good-natured soul with a cheerful and helpful attitude who was constantly overshadowed by her younger sister, Kamilah during her time on Earth. We can imagine the character’s personality only by its description!

#3 It is DAMN funny

For sure, death is not a funny topic. However, at The Good Place it turns out in an extremely interesting subject! From the moment Michael (Ted Danson) describes Eleanor’s final moments, The Good Place commits to a sunny absurdity that pervades every episode. Eleanor tries to learn to be good through her alleged soulmate-turned-confidante Chidi (William Jackson Harper), an academic who describes their situation as “a putrid, disgusting bowl of ethical soup.”

#4 It has a very carefully (and excellently) crafted world

The Good Place is a whole new world with established rules. The 322 residents are meticulously selected and the entire place is perfectly calibrated. Fun fact: if anything goes wrong, such as the presence of someone who doesn’t belong there, it can have catastrophic consequences. Also, you can’t swear – so Eleanor says “fork” uncountable times.

#5 At some point, it’s going to get deep

The Good Place can be a comedy TV show, but at point it does talk about important – and deep – topics. Besides death, it talks about privileges, choices and self-consciousness.

#6 JANICE!

D’Arcy Carden plays Janet, a programed guide who acts as the neighborhood’s main source of information, analogous to an intelligent personal assistant. She has infinite knowledge of the universe, can provide residents anything they desire and details everything of what is happening in the Good Place However, Janice does have some flaws.

#7 The plot twists

When you think that everything is doing well at the Good Place, you can be sure that a plot twist will happen. Just get ready!

#8 It is available at Netflix!

With 20 minutes’ episodes, the entire Season 1 (13 episodes) is available at Netflix. Half of Season 2 is also available at the catalog (7 episodes) and the TV series return for its final five episodes on January 4th, 2018.

Also, great news: NBC already renewed The Good Place for Season 3. The release date of the 13 new episodes is November 22nd, 2018.
