The second wave of the Coronavirus pandemic was expected already in the Brazilian territory, due to the holidays, summer vacation and the Carnaval festivals. However, the situation in Acre achieved a different level. The ICUs are not only receiving patients with COVID-19, but also with Dengue.
Dengue, a tropical intense flu, increased 500% in comparison with last year in Rio Branco, one of the most important cities in the state. The infectious disease physician Thor Dantas, professor at the Federal University of Acre (Ufac), sayed to the brazilian journal Folha de São Paulo that these diseases can appear simultaneously in a person: “The challenges are many, from the initial diagnosis. In a patient with febrile syndrome, we don’t know if it’s dengue or Covid, and the treatments are different,” he commented.” If the patient has both diseases at the same time, we don’t know exactly how one affects the other, if dengue can get Covid worse, or if Covid makes dengue worse.”
Besides this crisis, there are around 400 Haitians detained at the border of Acre and Peru. They are training to leave Brazil to migrate to the USA, but the borders are closed because of Covid-19.
The main challenge of the government now is to host those homeless families and immigrants in a safe place, avoiding at maximum contact and respecting social distancing. Otherwise, the situation of the hospitals will become unbearable with overcrowding and might not have enough equipment.
