Bridgerton Season 2: Is The TV Show Really Similar To The Book?

The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus.
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Casper Libero chapter.

The second season of Bridgerton is already here, and we are crazy about it! After more than one year of waiting for a new season, we are ready to get to know the new characters. But, since the show is based on a series of books, many fans are more excited to see if, this season, their book came to life.

This time, we’ll get to know more about Anthony Bridgerton. He is the oldest and, therefore, the next Viscount Bridgerton. After losing his father at the age of 18, he lives his life to the fullest but has a superstition that he will die at the same age as his father. Because of this belief, Anthony intends to marry for duty and for heirs, not for love.

But since the list of references is long, and we cannot stay here forever, we will show you some of the similarities and differences. But, let us warn you beforehand, there are more differences than similarities. So, if you read the book, be sure to calm your nerves and be prepared, because there will be some S-E-R-I-O-U-S spoilers ahead.

diversity and representativeness?

The first is a known one. Because of the diversity and representativeness of the Shondaland production, the characters from the high society aren’t all white. We knew Kate, Edwina, and Mary Sheffield, but now we will meet and be fond of the Sharma’s.

Even though this is considered a significant change, it is not enough to make people want to abandon the season in its entirety. But don’t worry, Kate Sharma is still the strict half-sister to Edwina. Her duty of finding a perfect suitor and future husband for the younger Sharma remains the same.

The new characters are similar to the book?

Oh, and since we are talking age, let me tell you that Kate from the show is five years older than the book one. Why is that? Did they change her age so the gap between her and Anthony would be smaller? Either way, this will not interfere in our affairs seeing that Kate Sharma, just like Kate Sheffield, is considered too old to debut in London society.

About debuting, in both the book and the TV show, Edwina is the diamond of the season. But, the means aren’t the same. To be a diamond of the first water, you have to be an exceptionally beautiful young woman. However, in the show, that doesn’t seem to matter. Even though our little Sharma is gorgeous, Queen Charlotte’s choice came from a provocation by Lady Danbury.

To worsen the situation a bit more, Edwina’s whole personality changed. In the books, she was a wise girl that wanted to marry an erudite man. From the start, she knew her sister was in love with Anthony Bridgerton. Now, she – and that may sound harsh – is a puppet. For us, mere spectators, it looks like Edwina Sharma is just following her sister’s orders. She is shown as a shallow girl that is amazed by anything and everything.

This is a significant change that is bothering a lot of fans because it changes the whole plotline of the story. Many Bridgerton stans thought this made Anthony and Kate look like the bad people. If you read the book, what were the chances of Edwina walking down the aisle to meet – and likely marry – Viscount Bridgerton? Yeah, none.

We know that writing for TV is way different and requires some changes. But, are some of them necessary? From our point of view, they tried to maintain some of the book stuff to say they were faithful to it, but, in reality, changed everything. Therefore we ask: does the end justify the meaning? Does the Kathony happy ever after justify all the differences between the book and the show?

We want to know what you think! So, don’t forget to tell us!
