As a former freshman and a new veteran, ready to welcome new students in Freshman Week, here are some of my first looks at the college world. Enjoy (and when tell me afterwords if you had the same ideas)!
Similar people! Everybody in class have similar interest and enjoy studying Humanities related subjects (Math, what Math?). Because of that, it’s wonderful for debates and sharing ideas.
And different peopleYou meet people from all parts of Brasil and São Paulo, with different ages, different life experiences, their own free styles or doing other communication courses offered by Cásper.
Location: right in the middle of a major São Paulo avenue, Paulista Avenue.I used to study in simple places, so I was completely shocked when college classes started. All the big buildings, colors, sounds, lots of people walking at every hour on the avenue… It was a brand new world! And now it seems so normal that sometimes, when I’m not around, I kind of miss the Paulista Avenue lifestyle.
Books? One thing that was very common on my school was that I had to buy some textbooks every beginning of year. At Cásper, we don’t need to buy a lot of books at the start of the year, but we need to read a lot of them as long as the classes goes. And it’s also marvelous that we have a huge library here, with a enormous collection of books.
Goodbye uniform! Many schools require the use of an uniform at classes. We don’t need any uniform at Cásper, besides the creativity and freedom to make any choice of clothes (which inspire us to be always related to fashion)!
Light, camera, action!Cásper is full of technologies and equipments for students to use. We have studios of computers, photos, TV and radio. Great cameras, recorders, softwares, programs for student’s classes, works, and learning. So, we can practice with real assessments by our very first day of class! A lot is offered to us, from the Esquinas magazine (interviewing and writing articles), the radio Gazeta AM (we can make our first and own program!), or the Edição Extra TV show, being an producer, camera man or even reporter!
Works, works… and printing lines! Here we have some tests, but a lot of works to be presented on the end of every two months. That scared me at first, but getting all these things printed was even worst… The large printing line only taught me one thing: never leave your works to be printed at the last minutes!
Every floor, a storyCásper is has four floors and a hundred halls, passages and stairs… I spent a year here and didn’t experienced all. Every place is different, sometimes with some artworks from students on the walls, such as the sixth floor with Publicity students’ projects. I feel that when students’ projects are exposed in the hallways is a great way to integrate us and expose the best of Cásper’s creative side. We also share the building with companies, like Gazeta TV, Fundação Cásper Líbero or even a little part of Globo (one of the biggest TV broadcasters in Brazil).
Some of your teachers may be famous! Or if not famous, amazingly renowned in the academic field! It’s common to start a college and have classes with a lot of great academic names. Cásper isn’t different. At my first year, all of my teachers were recognized great professors. My Theory of Communications professor, Eugênio Menezes de Oliveira, for instance, won a huge prize last year. I used to learn photojournalism with awesome professors, that had books published, were always invited for lectures in other colleges and won Photograph awards . Also, for the celebrity part, my Basic Journalism professor, Celso Unzelte, is a sports commentator at ESPN and author of many books about soccer.
Red and white loveAn unique thing at universities is the athletics. The A.A.A. Jesse Owens, from Cásper Líbero, is captivating. It brings Cásper together through sports, parties, events and even athletics’ clothes. We have also a mascot, the Birdman. People here have a big passion for the red and white colors (colors of Cásper), and usually wear those colors in special occasions, like the Universities Games, “JUCA” (that was also one of my biggest first impressions of this loved college)!
