Meet Tânia Teixeira: The New Casperian Teacher

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Casper Libero chapter.

Tânia Teixeira Pinto is the new teacher of Press Office for the second years of Journalism, at Cásper Líbero College. Casperian in the curriculum, in the heart and in the soul, Tânia talked with Her Campus about her college time, her desires as an academic and her perspectives for the future of Journalism.

Alicia Gouveia: Going back to the start, how did you choose Journalism?

Tânia Teixeira Pinto: I remember when I was very young and I already knew I wanted to become a journalist. I had a Portuguese teacher and she used to say that I would be either a Portuguese teacher, as her, or a journalist, because I loved to write. So, when I was 11 or 12, I chose the second one. And the funniest thing is that I was born on the day of Journalism, April 7th.

A: And how did you choose Cásper?

T: When I decided I was going to study Journalism, my mother said to me that there was only one place where I could do it. She was talking about Cásper Líbero. Then, I did some research about the college and all the names that passed by here. After that I had no doubts: I wanted Cásper! Either way, I applied to PUC and ECA-USP as well. When I did not get through the second phase of ECA, I was really happy! First of all, because the campus was really far away from my house and second of all, for me, it had to be Cásper.

A: What are your memories of your Casperian’s days?

T: It sounds almost like a joke when I tell people that everything here was bush. But it is true! The college was only on the fifth floor. All courses were there: Journalism, Public Relations and Advertising and Marketing. The true is that life happened on the fifth floor. Oh, it was the best time of my life! Everything that I am today is thanks to Cásper Líbero. Even my daughter says she is Cásper’s daughter, because I met my husband, her father, here.

A: And how is to be back here but now as a teacher?

T: Well, when I came to do the interview for the job, I said: “I am sorry, but I am really nervous because I love this place”. The thing is that I really wanted to come back, and to be back as a teacher is an honor. Since high school, I liked helping my friends and teaching them. I love to study and to be at the classroom. However, I had a moment in my life, after college, when I really enjoyed my job, but I missed studying. Then, I started thinking about becoming a teacher because I love to teach and to share my knowledge. In addtion, as a teacher, I can always be studying. For the next few years, I want to be working just as a teacher. But if I could choose between being a teacher or being a student, I would choose to be a student.

A: Last but not least, how do you see the job market for the journalists today?

T: Since when I was a student, every career was scary, not only Journalism. Instability exists in all professions. But I see that nowadays, with technology getting bigger and bigger, opportunities are emerging for communication, and a journalist is the person that knows best how to create content. So, there are many chances because the need of good content is real. Maybe we have to change the way we were doing it – newspaper, radio, TV… –, since today we have new medias. Just have no prejudice for the new. Embrace it, learn with it!
