We’ve all experienced the disappointment of having your favorite TV series canceled after getting too attached to it, and then you ask yourself: “Why would they do this to such a lovely and well constructed series?”. So, here’s a list of shows that won our hearts and left us wanting a little bit more of the characters’ story!
- Anne With An E
-
“Anne With An E” is a TV series based on the books “Anne of Green Gables”, written by Lucy Maud Montgomery in 1907. The children story received an adaptation in early 2017, and fans loved the new and modern take it provided. Although it was a huge success among viewers, the production got canceled after three seasons, in 2019.
Anne is known for having a passionate fan base, which raised thousands of dollars to make their voices heard by placing billboards in downtown Toronto and at the Times Square, in New York, asking Netflix and CBC to renew the show.
- Everything Sucks
-
“Everything Sucks” is a coming-of-age comedy, set in the 90’s, that explores a lot of interesting topics, including issues with finding out your sexuality and mental health. The plot starts with a very specific 90’s vibe and with hints of “Freaks and Geeks”.
Even though the show received great reviews from critics, it got canceled shortly after premiering in 2018. Allegedly, it was because most people didn’t watch the entire first episode, and the ones who did, didn’t stick longer in the series.
Although Netflix acknowledged the audience loyalty to the show, they didn’t see growing potential.
- The Society
-
There’s a big list of TV series that got canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and “The Society” is part of it. The Netflix’s YA (young adult) drama tells the story of a group of teenagers that return from a school trip to see that all of the adults and the children had vanished, leaving only the teenagers in town.
The show had a good audience and fans loved it, but, despite all the positive aspects, Netflix decided to cancel due to pandemic protocols and budget issues.
- Julie And The Phantoms
-
This Netflix production, that debuted in late 2020, is based on a Brazilian children’s series of the same name. “Julie And The Phantoms” won everyone’s hearts by telling the story of Julie, a teenager who lost touch with her passion for music after losing her mother. Then, on one random day, three ghosts appear in her mom’s old music studio, being the three of them musicians from 1995.
The musical relieved the old show with a hint of nostalgia and a modern take. Fans fell in love with Julie, Luke, Alex and Reggie, and having their story canceled was a shock to all. As well as others TV series, “Julie And The Phantoms” got canceled because of the pandemic, and the director said it was not impossible for it to return some day.
- I Am Not Okay With This
-
Netflix’s “I Am Not Okay With This”, went to air in 2020 and the series had a great response from the public. It is based on a comic book of the same name that tells the story of Sidney, a 17-year-old who’s been through some trauma in her life.
Early in the plot, she finds out she has supernatural powers. The story revolves around how the character deals with several problems, including her journey with grief.
The first season ended without a conclusion since it was already planned that a second season would take place. The season 2 scripts were ready when, also because of Covid-19 and budget issues, it had to be canceled.
- One Day At A Time
-
Different series get canceled every other day, but not always the public appeal is so big that they get it renewed. “One Day At A Time” was, controversially, canceled in 2019, after three seasons aired on Netflix. The sitcom won everybody’s hearts by telling the story of a latin family in the United States, and showing the differences between generations of the same family.
However, Pop TV renewed it for a fourth season, but, shortly after it went on air, it got canceled for a second time because of Covid. Still, “ODAAT” deserves a watch, because it explores important themes with a fun and light approach, and it’s great and educational to watch in a family environment.
