The term “fashion journalism” has been used in Brazil since the 40’s decade, when the articles about fashion started to grow in Rio’s post. Also the magazines “O Cruzeiro“ and “Manchete“ were fundamental for the dissemination of the gender in the country.
But in times of multiple blogs talking about their own perspective of campaigns, runway shows and vlogs giving beauty tutorials, and mostly social media, what’s the real impact of a magazine? It is clear that the public’s need has changed, but now the real challenge to them is to continue being relevant and also try a constant recreation of themselves. And how they do that? By giving us articles, interviews and fashion shoots that are not dated. The idea (and we are still trying to figure it out how exactly) is to be fresh, modern and, most importantly, timeless and collectible. Investing in graphic design, bringing up debates that go beyond clothes and relating them to plastic arts, cinema, dance, the street culture… The thing is, a good fashion magazine may be published 3 years ago and still be relevant. It’s just like when you read a good book, you just can’t get enough of it.
Below we have three good examples that go beyond the dual Vogue-Elle to get you addicted to:
An arm of one of the most influent fashion websites of Brazil, FFW, is published 2 times a year and gives a unique point of view in terms of fashion, entertainment and visual content. Owned by Luminosidade group, the same one that organizes SPFW, is not only cool but also sexy and unique.
Active since 2004, this is one of the most internationally recognized magazines of Brazil. Also published twice a year, in digital and print English versions only, they give a modern view on “what’s past, what’s happening in the world and what’s next in life & style” and has been highly recommended by seelike.me, Ford Models and the imagist.
This is the newest independent fashion magazine of the country that features both recognized and young talents. Created for the curious ones, the first issue is a compilation of editorials, stories, conversations, debates and great articles. To keep an eye on it!
