Why the skincare set that works for my bestie doesn’t work for me?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Casper Libero chapter.

Skincare is the moment and, besides being good for our skin health, it is also good for our mental health. It is a form of self-care. Taking off makeup, getting a good facial massage and applying a lip mask are great ways to relax from a long stressful day.

Every slumber party calls for a spa moment with the right to try different products, get massages, use facial masks and have lots of gossips. Today there are different skin care products, such as acids, moisturizers for the face and the eye area and facial oils. However, not all of them work for all skin types, so there is a wide range of options for every skin specificity.

To talk about this subject, we interviewed the doctor and post-graduate in dermatology, Iris Markuz who is also the owner of the page @dermatoguia, where she shares her knowledge and experiences in this world.

As we all know there are different types of skin, but the differentiation goes beyond the basic one we know. According to Iris, “The basic thing is this differentiation between dry, combination, oily, and normal skin. But within that, there is skin that is more sensitive or has associated conditions, for example, rosacea, melasma, and acne. So it isn’t easy to consider a skincare standard for everyone. Because each person has different conditions, it bothers them in different ways.”

Despite the specificity of each skin, there is no need to stop sharing products with your bestie. According to the post graduate in dermatology, “In general, there is no forbidden product to use, nor ingredients. It depends on each skin. Some ingredients are not interesting in general, they end up bringing more cases of irritation and sensibilization, but it’s very wide, there are many ingredients on the market, it would have to have an individual evaluation, too.” So it is important to look at which skin a particular product is suitable for, so there is no case of irritation, before the spa night with the besties.

Not only on spa day it is important to take care of the skin – it’s an everyday necessity -, s, interestingly,t all skins use a trio of skincare routines: the sunscreen, which is the most important because it prevents photoaging but also some types of cancer, the soap, and the moisturizer, indicates Iris. Besides that, with the arrival of winter in the southern hemisphere, the doctor points out that with the delay in the baths, which are warmer, the skin is usually drier, which can be a trigger for those who have rosacea, for example. The care will change a little bit. The two main allies are facial moisturizer and lip balm.
