Top 5 Films To Enjoy During Spooky Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CAU chapter.

It is officially spooky season y’all and if you’re like me, for the next two months you only want to participate in the spookiest of activities. To kickstart spooky season I like to watch tons of the OG scary movies and thrilling series. Listed below are my top ten movies AND series of the season!

First up we have American Horror Story:

American Horror Story is an occult/horror fiction series created by Ryan Murphy who is also the creator of glee (extra points for you Murphy!). The first episode aired on October 5th, of 2011 and has been on since. Each season has been themed differently. Seasons 1-8 are; Murder House (2011), Asylum (2012-13), Coven (2013-14), Freak Show (2014-15), Hotel (2015-16), Roanoke (2016), Cult (2017), Apocalypse (2018). Every season has followed the same eerie, comedic theme while staying unique and keeping the aesthetic of the show. My personal favorites are Asylum, Hotel, and Roanoke because they are the goriest of the seasons. If you haven’t watched you should definitely snuggle up on the couch and pull it up on Netflix. It’s worth it!

Next up is The Bride of Chucky:

The Bride of Chucky is an American horror/comedy film that was produced by David Kirschner Productions in 1998. This is the fourth movie apart of this franchise in sequel to Child’s Play 3. In this movie, Chucky finds his perfect partner, murders her and traps her soul into another doll. The two end up going on a psychotic killing spree, killing people for entertainment. In addition to this movie being scary, it is completely comical. While Chucky is pretty creepy, he makes some of the best jokes which can sometimes make him even creepier than he already is. If you aren’t into being super shook for spooky season give this movie a try, it isn’t as scary as it seems.

Next, we have A Nightmare on Elm Street:

This movie series is a CLASSIC! If you haven’t watched it you need to ASAP. The first movie was released on November 9th, 1984. In Craven’s thrasher film multiple teens from the Mid-West fall prey to Freddy Krueger, a disfigured killer who preys on the teenagers in their dreams. If the teens are killed in their dreams they end up dead in reality. This movie is absolutely horrifying and is the perfect example of a classic horror film. In the film, Freddy chooses these victims as a revenge plot on the teens’ parents who had participated in his murder (the murder that left him disfigured). With that being said, this movie isn’t for the faint of heart or for those who get queasy from seeing gore and blood. BUT, if you can handle it, this should definitely be on your spooky season watch list.

Next is Halloween:

Halloween is another thrasher classic that was released over 30 years ago in October of 1978. The movie starts in 1963 when Michael Myers kills his then 17-year old sister Judith. Just 15 years later Michael Myers breaks out of a mental institution and returns to his hometown to kill again. This is yet another horror film set in the Mid-West (Is there a pattern here or what?). Most of Myers’ victims were “promiscuous” substance abusers while the lone survivor was depicted as pure and innocent. This movie is just as scary as A Nightmare on Elm Street if not scarier. So try not to watch this alone (unless you’re just that brave).

Last but not least True Blood:

True Blood isn’t as scary as the others listed but it is just as intriguing. Sookie Stackhouse, a small-town Louisiana waitress who is telepathic falls in love with 173-year-old Bill Compton, a vampire. The first episode was aired in September of 2008. This show has a cool twist on the cliche vampire-human love story and will definitely keep you on your toes. This show is going to wind you down from all of your spooky endeavors. Don’t be scared to cozy up on the couch with this one.
