E-Books VS Real Books

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CCCU chapter.

Ebooks VS Real Books

We’ve all had this argument: what are better, eBooks or real books?

EBook Pros:

·         They’re lightweight

·         They’re portable

·         They hold hundreds of books

·         You can buy accessories for e-readers

·         They don’t take up loads of space

EBook Cons:

·         You can’t read them in the bath

·         If they crash, you can lose your entire library

·         Tablets/e-Readers look boring

·         They make you a target for muggings

Real Book Pros:

·         They smell amazing

·         You can get them really cheap second hand

·         They look amazing on a shelf

·         You can buy different editions, and sets

·         No one wants to steal your books

·         You can lend them to a friend

Real Book Cons:

·         They’re heavy

·         They’re bad for the environment

·         The cost of printing has increased

·         People can write in them

·         They take up a lot of space, and you can quickly find yourself drowning in books

Here’s what the CCCU team think…

Amy -“I prefer real books, actually being able to turn the pages and stuff and I can read better from an actual book. I find it hard to read eBooks.”

Melissa – “I have two e-readers, as well as hundreds of books. I love them both, and both definitely have their perks, but I guess we have to progress with technology. I just hope they don’t get rid of print altogether.”

Lorna – “I like both, eBooks are a lot handier because it only takes a second to download them and you can put hundreds on your kindle, but I do love traditional books still.”

Mason – “The real thing anytime. Nothing can beat actually having the actual book! I have quite a few signed copies and limited edition hardbacks which you just can’t get if you buy eBooks. But eBooks are extremely handy if you’re going on holiday and read a lot, as you can as many books as you want without the worry of baggage allowances.”

Penny – “I think both have their place. Real books are great because they have texture and weight, but if I’m stuck on a plane for eight hours, give me an iPad or a Kindle any day.”
