Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is traditionally a Christian celebration before Ash Wednesday, celebrated on the Tuesday in the 7th week before Easter. Last year it was in February, as it is for the next two years, but Easter is late this year. Traditionally many Christians will examine their selves and consider which characteristics they need to amend. The association with Pancakes is that they were a way to use up all of the ārichā foods before the fasting season.
Nowadays you can get pancake mix in a packet or a shaker and just add water or an egg, but I have always preferred to make them from scratch! (or rather more I have rathered it when my brother made them from scratch)
Here are two recipes for pancakes, one is the commonly mistaken pancake that is more like a crepe and the other is the ācorrectā (apparently) pancake which is thicker and often had in America for breakfast with Maple syrup and bacon (I seriously recommend!)
Ā
Recipe 1 – ‘The Imposter’ (apparently)
110g/4oz Plain flour
2 eggs
200ml/7fl oz milk mixed with 75ml/3fl oz water
50g/2oz butter
- Sift the flour into a (big) bowl and make a well in the middle.
- Crack the eggs into the well and whisk in, involving all of the flour
- Gradually add all of the milk/water combo whilst still whisking round
- Whisk until the batter is smooth and has no lumps
- Melt the butter, adding some the mixture and the remainder to the hot pan
- Cook your pancakes!
- Top them with whatever you like
- Enjoy your pancakes
Ā
Recipe 2 – ‘The Real Deal’ (again, apparently)
135g/4 Ā¾ oz plain flour
1tsp baking powder
2 tsp caster sugar
130ml/4 Ā½ fl oz milk
1 large egg
2 tsp melted butter
- Sift the butter, baking powder and caster sugar into a (big) bowl.
- (In a different bowl) whisk the milk, egg and butter.
- Add the milk mix into the (big) bowl and whisk together.
- Whisk until the batter is smooth
- Cook the pancakes, these should rise to be thicker than theĀ āimposterā pancakes
- Add toppings (maple syrup and bacon I would really recommend!!)
- Eat your āproperā pancakes
Once you have made (or got someone else to make) your pancakes, why not post a picture on our HerCampus Facebook or Twitter? The links are below!
