Easter is fast approaching us as well as that all important Spring Break. With things such as Lent effecting many people who may be Christian or not, it seems only appropriate that we look at one of the main men (on earth) in the Christian faith and thatās the Pope. Newly appointed, back in March 2013, Pope Francis has seen a great surge of followers, re-finding their fading faith in the Catholic Church.
Whilst many will say that homosexuality was a major problem and concern for Christians, Catholics especially, Pope Francis has called for us to be more concerned with poverty, which has been welcomed by many! The first pope to have been born outside of Europe in over 1000 years, he has appointed many cardinals from the poorest of countries, and has even snuck out of an evening to feed the local poor and homeless. Many have been eagerly awaiting an invitation from the Pope for dinner; however he invited 200 homeless people to be waited on and fed. The attendants discussed their experiences on the streets and were given food to take with them when they left.
There are many things that Pope Francis has done that indicate a different approach include washing the feet of young offenders, including women and those of other faiths. He has called two of his followers offering his blessings and comforts, as well as had more open views on āillegitimateā children and those married outside of the church.
The main thing that Pope Francis has had a very different view on is homosexuals. He couldnāt see why so many people were focused on this whilst so many were dying needlessly every day. At last it seems a member of the Catholic church with great power can begin to change peoples views and opinions on homosexuality.Ā
I personally belong to Irish Catholic and Baptist heritage, though my parents never forced it upon me, I cannot imagine getting married anywhere that isn’t a Church! I have always questioned the churchās views and its obsession with homosexuality, I am now beginning to believe again, like many more people, in the church and find a place for some of its beliefs and practices in my life.
