Sabrina Marcos is a powerhouse of involvement.
A sophomore public policy major with a minor in English, from Tampa, Fla., Marcos is a Junior PanHellenic Delegate for Alpha Delta Pi, a UNC Admissions Ambassador, a Pogue Scholar and a member of the Pogue Scholars Tar Heel Outreach Committee, as well as a mentor in the Scholars Latino Initiative.
Marcos was one of the select few of a large applicant pool chosen as a UNC Admissions Ambassador during the first semester of her freshman year.
As an ambassador, her responsibilities include giving campus tours to prospective students and their families and taking part in recruitment events, such as Explore Carolina and Carolina 101.
“Being an ambassador means appreciating the little quirks about this school and showcasing how the Carolina Way is truly present in every aspect here,” Marcos said.
As a Pogue Scholar, Marcos is one of six sophomores with the scholarship, which recognizes academic achievement and diversity.
Through her scholarship, Marcos became a member of the Tar Heel Outreach Committee. This project aims to introduce the potential ideas of college education to Chapel Hill High School students from low income communities.
Her newest project on campus is the Scholars Latino Initiative. Marcos will serve as a mentor for a peer Latino student throughout the next three years. She said she is extremely proud to be a part of this organization.
Even with all of her extracurricular involvement on campus, Marcos still finds time for her academics – and she takes them very seriously.
Sabrina is goal-oriented. Her concentration within the public policy major is economics, business policy and community development. She chose her English minor because writing is one of her main passions.
“I love words and using them to create something emotive,” Marcos said.
As a public policy student, the major allows her to put her writing to use, which she hopes will guide her future as a lawmaker or litigator.
After UNC, Marcos’ goal is to attend Levin College of Law at the University of Florida, to become a civil litigator dealing with corporate and commercial law.
“I literally see myself at depositions and writing legal briefs at a small firm in Tampa, Fla,” Marcos said.
However, becoming a lawyer is not her only goal. Marcos’ other dream is to open a Cuban restaurant in Chapel Hill or Nashville and name it ‘Mambo’s Cuban Café.’
“I’ve always loved food and coming from a Cuban family opening up a culturally diverse restaurant in a unique location has always been one of my dreams,” she said.
When Marcos has free time – and somehow she does! – she loves to run around the small neighborhoods in Chapel Hill.
The song that should play every time she walks in a room is ‘Good Feeling’ by Flo Rida, and if she could have any job in the world, it would be as an anchor for E! News Network or as the next Ellen Degeneres with her own talk show where she would discuss “random, hilarious things.”
Marcos’ favorite spot on campus is the quad in front of Graham Memorial, where she loves to lay on the grass and listen to music.
Sabrina’s words to live by are her high school’s motto: ‘Esse Quam Videri,’ which mean ‘to be, rather than to seem.’
Sabrina Marcos is a bubbly and passionate UNC student. It seems she would be too busy to enjoy the little daily quirks and perks of this university. But in reality, she is an embodiment of all the tremendous, world-changing efforts a UNC student is capable of, while loving every seemingly-minute detail of the Carolina Experience along the way.
