Spend some time with this week’s campus cutie, Zachery Werder, and you’re bound to be laughing a lot. In addition to filmmaking, this UNC sophomore enjoys stand-up comedy, attending board game night with his friends and entertaining people in general.
Hometown: Denver, NC
Major: Computer Science
Minor: Global Cinema
Favorite breakfast food: Salt and Pepper
Hobbies: Stand-up, acting and filmmaking.
Fun fact: I’m a Gemini who enjoys to take late night strolls around campus.
HC: What inspired you to go into filmmaking?
ZW: I have always been interested in the [way] film captures people. In high school, I just watched tons of movies. Since coming to UNC, this interest had an opportunity to become something more constructive. I’ve really enjoyed the classes I’ve taken under the global film minor.
HC: What are some of the things you learned in your classes?
ZW: I learned the basics of making film and how to approach it in way that’s both scholarly and artistic. Film’s an awesome field of study because it’s history, art [and] English, all kind of wrapped up together.
HC: What are some of your favorite Carolina memories?
ZW: My whole time here has been awesome, but if I had to pick one moment, it would be my first day in HoJo (Hinton James). I stayed up all night playing ping-pong; everyone was just so open and kind. It really set the tone for how great college would be.
HC: And what kind of things do you hope to accomplish within your last 2.5 years?
ZW: I just hope to do more of what I am doing the next couple years. Hopefully, I’ll come out of it all a better adult person.
HC: If you could have any job — realistic or not — what would it be?
ZW: I have no idea what I want to be, but if I could be anything I think I would a stand-up comedian. It would be a blast to make people laugh for a living.
