A junior here at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Sarah Spurr is not only a fantastic student and member of Zeta Tau Alpha, but also has an outstanding knowledge and sense of fashion different from most students here. Her unique edgy yet classy style combined with her confident personality draws all eyes to her. Even though she is currently traveling, she took the time for this interview and now we are able to give you some of the best fashion advice there is from someone changing the fashion scene here at UNC!
HC: How would you describe your personal style?
SS: I would describe my personal style as a combination of classic pieces and unexpected more trendy items. I wouldn’t characterize it as any one particular style, but more of mixing and matching the things that I like. Lately I’ve been really into investing in timeless pieces that I can wear forever. I also tend to stick with neutral tones.
HC: What are some of your favorite brands or places to shop?
SS: I don’t think that there is one particular brand that is my favorite. I kind of have go to pieces from different lines. For example, I love AG jeans, they fit like a glove. Vince makes the best quality basic tops and sweaters. I also like the edginess of Brandy Melville – so I own several of their pieces. In terms of shopping, I’ll shop anywhere – however, small boutiques are my favorite.
HC: What accessory or piece of clothing can you not live without?
SS: One accessory I can’t live without would probably be bracelets. If there’s anything I always gravitate to it’s nice bracelets. I’m a big fan of stacking up your wrists as I feel that it kind of pulls everything together. Also, I like to mix metals, something that I think a lot of people won’t do.
HC: Do you have a style icon or quote to live by?
SS: I don’t have one particular style icon, but I think that Olivia Palermo has great style. She mixes all different pieces and always looks put together. One quote I love is by Karl Lagerfeld. He says: “There is no beauty without strangeness.” I couldn’t agree more. I think great style is just daring to be different and being confident in yourself.
HC: So you’re apart of the UNC Globe program and have been traveling the world this past semester. Have you learned any fashion tips overseas?
SS: Being overseas my style has definitely evolved. European fashion is all about black and white. The clothes are very loose and tights are a big thing. I’ve tried to kind of mix this style with my own preexisting tastes.
HC: What is one thing every college girl should have in their closet?
SS: One thing every girl should have in her closet is a great black dress. You can always dress it up or down and it works in all seasons. Plus, black is slimming and a great fitting dress always looks polished. It’s a definite go-to!
HC: Do you have anything that makes your style unique?
SS: I guess the one thing that makes my style unique is that I really don’t care what anyone thinks of what I wear. If I like it, I go for it… Even if everyone else in the room thinks I’m crazy. I like things that are different. If too many people have it, I’m deterred from buying it.
