DIY: Holiday Decorations

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapel Hill chapter.

Do you need some ideas on decorating your dorm room or apartment for the holidays?

It can be difficult to get into the holiday spirit away from home, but there a heeps of DIY holiday crafts out there that can help make an dorm room or apartment a bit more festive!
Now, most of us are all too familiar with stringing lights around our bed posts and hanging paper snowflakes from the ceiling, and Pinterest has hundred of more creative and easy ideas to offer.

1. Try hanging your paper snowflakes and ornaments from pine cones

Here’s a simple way to – literally – add some more life to your festive paper cutouts. Pine cones are inexpensive at your local craft stores and make for a wintery way to hang decorations without taking up the space of an actual Christmas tree.

2. Create a wreath out of cookie cutters

Holiday shaped cookie cutters are a staple in supermarkets and craft stores at this time of year. Rather than buying a pine wreath that can get pricey and drop needles all over your room or apartment, tie cookie cutters together in a wreath shape, and adorn with a ribbon just like you would with any real wreath! Painting the cookie cutters makes the wreath even more festive, so pick up some red or green acrylic paint at your local craft store.

3. Hang stockings for all of your roommates

Target is a great option for affordable and adorable Christmas stockings. You can hang them for you and your roommates and even you them as a way of distributing gifts for secret santa parties! You can hang each stocking using Command hooks, or if you have lots of roommates and friends that you’re hanging stockings for, you can use two hooks to hang a string and clothespin each stocking to the string.

4. Finally, it wouldn’t be the holiday season without some tasty treats – no-bake, edible dreidels for Hanukkah!

Hanukkah falls early this year, starting on Dec. 8, while most of us will still be at school. As a study break during finals, prepare these edible dreidels from the comforts of your dorm – even if you don’t have an oven!

Martha Stewart’s Edible Chocolate Marshmallow Dreidel recipe calls for:

  • 12 chocolate kisses
  • 8 ounces melted semisweet chocolate
  • 12 marshmallows
  • 12 thin pretzel sticks
  • 2 ounces melted white chocolate

    1. Dip the bottom of each chocolate kiss in melted chocolate and stick to the flat side of each marshmallow. Refrigerate for 10 minutes.
    2. Cut a small slit in the opposite side of each marshmallow and insert a pretzel stick. Dip dreidels in chocolate and place them on a baking sheet to be refrigerated for another 10 minutes.
    3. Fill a resealable plastic bag with the melted white chocolate, cut a small slit in the corner of the plastic bag. Pipe Hebrew letters onto three sides of the dreidels and return to baking sheet. Refrigerate for at least five minutes and then enjoy!

With a little inspiration, it’s not hard to get into the holiday spirit while away from home.

No matter what holiday you celebrate, there are so many ways to decorate and get excited for the holiday season with your roommates and friends.

And, of course, since it’s also the season of finals, coming home to a beautifully decorated-for-the-holidays room can truly be the gift that keeps on giving!
