Five Blogs to Read Starting Today

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapel Hill chapter.

If you read Claudia Plazas’ Blogging to Defend Rights article last week, you can see how much influence blogs and other social media outlets have on public opinion and information today. Blogs serve a number of different purposes for an organization. However, they ultimately serve as a daily tool for personalized and interactive news updates that traditional print media sometimes can’t deliver. Even Her Campus? has a number of blogs which can be found here!

Whether or not you are a WordPress, Tumblr or Blogger user, consider checking out these blogs for daily news and college student tips in the following areas:

1. CareerOne Day, One Internship
A 2006 Cornell graduate started this blog in order to help college students find their dream internship. Not only does this blog provide you with useful tips for your summer internship search, the site will even e-mail you daily with a new company’s internship information; all you have to do is sign up!

What’s on this blog right now? The site currently features an article discussing how you can determine whether or not a company offers internships. For example, even if you’re unsure about internship opportunities at a company, you can search for past interns on networks like LinkedIn. Also, did you know that “many companies will create positions for you if you pitch them effectively?” It’s not too late to start the internship search, so start reading this blog and start searching!

2. World NewsThe Lede
Even the newspapers are starting their own blogs. The Lede is a blog from The New York Times updated daily by Robert Mackey. It features breaking news from the United States and from around the world. The blog uses New York Times articles as well as outside Web sources to bring you the daily news in a more interactive way. For instance, the blog also encourages all of its readers to be pro-active and discuss further the article topics through the comment threads.

What’s on this blog right now? Recently, the blog has been featuring the protests in Egypt. Check out this recent interview with Gigi Ibrahim, a graduate from the American University in Cairo. Gigi is a blogger and an activist updating The Lede on the street protests through her own perspective.

3. Technology Google™ Student Blog
Google actually has a whole directory of blogs worth checking out, but I find this one is the most useful for college students. This site not only updates you on Google news, but it also offers student tips on how to make the most of Google’s products for class projects and student organizations. You will also find information on Google’s student programs, contests, scholarships and more.

What’s on this blog right now? The most recent blog post introduces one of Google’s latest endeavors: the Google Art Project. Using street view technology, this site takes you inside the world’s art museums where you can browse through different art collections. You can even create your own personalized collection from your favorite pieces. Also, this article showcases how Google Calendar can be used for student organizations; pretty neat, right?

4. Arts The Curious Brain
Whether you’re an artist in need of inspiration or just want to check out some interesting art projects, consider following The Curious Brain. This blog features various kinds of projects from designers, painters, musicians and more. Did I mention it’s also updated multiple times daily? This blog isn’t just for traditional artists, either. Marketing communications and advertising agencies such as Ogilvy and Mather have featured multiple posts from this blog on Twitter.

What’s on this blog right now? THIS toothbrush promotes miswak, an organic substitute for a toothbrush used primarily in the Middle East. Not only does THIS toothbrush help the environment, it’s got pretty cool packaging, too.

5. Just for FunThe Daily Infographic
You never know what you will find on this blog, but one thing is for sure: this blog will always entertain you. For all of you visual learners, the duo behind this blog delivers all kinds of information through illustrations, or “infographics.” You can find these infographics discussing anything from music to business to the environment. It’s an interesting concept.

What’s on this blog right now? The blog just posted on the History of the Super Bowl. How fitting! Also, for all you advertisers and marketers out there, the How Color Affects Our Purchases is a fun read.
