These days, you might be looking for books that will transport you into a world unlike ours. Fantasy, realistic fiction, romance…escapist fiction occurs in any and all genres. Here are five books that will give your mind a little respite from our current circumstances.
- American Royals by Katharine McGee
-
I absolutely devoured American Royals when I read it a couple weeks ago, and I’m stunned the book isn’t more popular! The novel imagines United States would look like if George Washington became a monarch rather than a president. McGee’s novel follows the college-aged royals and all their drama – think Keeping up with the Kardashians meets royalty. If you liked Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston, you’ll surely love American Royals!
- Check, Please! Book 1: #Hockey
-
If you are looking for a fun, fast-paced graphic novel, then the first volume of Check, Please is perfect! I read the first graphic novel about a year ago, and the sequel just came out – and it is even better than the first. Enjoy cute illustrations and an even cuter plot.
- Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson
-
Who knew that a novel all about children spontaneously combusting into flames would make me laugh so much! Lillian is in over her head when she agrees to take care of two toddlers who burst into flames whenever they get upset. The novel is laugh out loud funny, but also heartfelt and bittersweet.
- Neverworld Wake by Marisha Pessl
-
I absolutely loved Neverworld Wake when I read it months ago, and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since I finished the book all those moons ago. Neverworld Wake follows a group of college friends who are perpetually trapped in a Groundhog Dayp-esque purgatory until they all unamiousuly agree on the one person who will survive. The catch? All the others will die. Neverworld Wake is part thriller, part fantasy, and all parts entertaining.
- The Duke and I by Julia Quinn
-
If you’re a fan of historical romance, Shonda Rhimes, or being swept off your feet, than The Duke and I is the book for you. The first in a long series, the novel is fast-paced and generally stands the test of time, despite being written almost 20 years ago. The kicker? Shonda Rhimes is adapting the Duke and I into a series on Netflix, so make sure to read the book before it gets mega-popular in the future.
