Hey everyone! As the editor-in-chief of Her Campus at Chapel Hill, I’m thrilled to introduce you to one of our long-time writers and editors, Sabrina Berndt! Sabrina is a senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She’s from Washington, North Carolina (not to be confused with the capital), and she is majoring in Journalism (Reporting) and English. You’ve probably loved her journalistic pieces on politics and her personal essays and opinion pieces. Here’s a little introduction to a wonderful member of our team. HCXO, Genni!
Her Campus appealed to me in the beginning because I was tired of writing articles about topics I didn’t care about for class. I knew I was passionate about women’s issues and politics, but I didn’t have an avenue for opinion writing until I joined. When I took an opinion writing class, I learned how to form stronger arguments and started utilizing these skills for Her Campus. Since then, I’ve been super proud of the op-eds I’ve published.
My dream job varies widely because of my never ending existential crisis, but I would love to be a feminist opinion writer for an online publication, such as the Huffington Post. I want to bring women’s issues and survivors’ (of sexual assault/domestic violence) stories to the forefront and actually bring reform via my writing.
I’m a crazy dog mom! I’ve had dogs my entire life, and I honestly can’t imagine a life without one. Right now, I currently have one pup named Britney S. Pearse (yes, it’s a Glee reference) and she is my world. She just turned 6 years old in August, and hopefully she’ll live forever – even though she’s a nightmare.
A concert ticket! I can’t sing or play an instrument, but music has always played a huge part in my life. I’m also addicted to going to concerts, including local bands. I think I have three or four concerts in November? It’s going to be a busy month, but it’ll be worth it.
1. My first pick has to be The Addams Family, because Morticia is my aesthetic, and I hope to have a crazy, gothic family one day. 2. As of this moment, 13 Going On 30 also feels pretty accurate. I feel like my teenage years disappeared, and now I have to be a full-blown adult in a few months. 3. I don’t have a number three. I don’t watch too many movies, sorry!
I love lazy days, so my perfect day would start around noon. I would spend some time shopping and go home to my partner and dog to cook dinner and watch a funny movie with some red wine.
I love experimenting with makeup. I spend way too much time watching tutorials and way too much money on fun makeup that I wear maybe twice a week. But doing my makeup is the only truly relaxing hobby of mine.
According to my partner, I can snap my fingers really well? I can also rap almost any Eminem song! Besides Rap God, obviously.
I’m most excited to continue writing about feminist issues that I think need to be discussed. I think organizations like Her Campus are a great gateway into opinion writing, which is just as valid as objective journalism. As a journalism major, I don’t typically have an opportunity to have an opinion, which means I have a lot of built-up energy for my article each week!
