So you didn’t get the dream internship this summer? All the plans of living in the big city and living life like Gossip Girl are suddenly gone and you have to return to your childhood room and parent’s rules?
Rejection is absolutely crushing, but solace won’t be found at the bottom of a Ben and Jerry’s pint. Instead, try these tips for making the most of your summer to stay on your A-game and begin to competitively build your resume.
Internships are key for learning a trade, but don’t fret. Not getting one doesn’t mean that doesn’t mean that your summer has to be spent watching MTV and eating your parents out of house and home. Summer is the time for catchy pop tunes and adventure.
While internships are ideal for resume-boosting, there are still many other ways to utilize your summer.
THROW SOME D’S ON IT. (some Mickey-D’s)
I know by college you wanted to be doing something more than scalping tickets at the local theater, but it is better than nothing. Apply everywhere and anywhere. Money is vital for other summer adventures to come.
LET’S GET DOWN TO BUSINESS! (in your field)
Programs like Big Brother/Big Sister, Boys and Girls club, or even the local Y have great programs for getting involved for generic volunteering, but it is more important to attempt to specialize.
If you are a science major, many labs look for techs for basic labor. It’s not paid, but it is a foot in the door. Nursing homes are also good for those looking to go pre-med.
Journalism major? Might want to start a blog that is topical to your interest to practice writing and put it on your resume.
VIVE LA VIDA LOCA!
Nothing makes you competitive like learning a new language. Rosetta Stone and programs of similar caliber are great ways to add to your skills. Spanish is always useful, but you can again fit the language to your major.
HIT THE ROAD, JACK.
Time to put that new language and money to use. Travel time! Going on cultural adventures, even within your state, are great ways to open your eyes to the world.
GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN.
There is no point to be all work and no play. Not getting that internship gives you no excuse not to be doing something you’ve always wanted to do. Go to the gym, get a tan, take tons of great Facebook photos and make everyone jealous.
It’s important to establish a routine and balance between work, learning and fun. Maybe decide that sleeping until 2 p.m. is only acceptable once a week? Maybe only party once a weekend?
Make a loose schedule and stick to it.
It’s summertime! Go enjoy it.
