5 Reasons to Go Out More By Yourself

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapman chapter.

It may seem a scary proposition; going to dinner or a movie by yourself or going to a concert without your best friend by your side but when you think about it, it really isn’t.

1. You’ll notice more things. Put your phone away. Although it’s tempting to just stare at that screen rather than look like a loser alone, no one actually cares. Look up and people watch, I promise you’ll see some pretty interesting things. Learning to be present is a very important skill.

2. Confidence. What’s more daunting than exploring a new place alone? The feeling of accomplishment you will get once you do this will be all thanks to you. No one else was there to help; it was all you navigating your way around!

3. Eat all the food! Don’t you hate it when your friend ends up eating half of what you ordered? No need to worry about that when you’re out alone and if there are leftovers, no sharing later! Bonus: you also don’t have to play the game of ‘where do you want to eat?’

4. Reflection. Sometimes it’s nice to not worry about anyone but yourself. Go grab a cup of coffee or tea and sit down and just take a moment to reflect on your past week.

5. Feel like a badass. Nothing strikes fear into an insecure man more than an independent woman. For good reason too, they are strong, capable, and confident. Not only that but you will gain a respect from fellow women and the respect of yourself.

So next time you have a free day, don’t feel the need to spend it with anyone but youself. Instead take the time and do something you want to do. Whether it’s going to that new restaurant or seeing a new exhibit an art museum, go explore the world alone. Put aside the judgments of others, I promise you they have better things to be thinking about than “what’s that girl doing alone?” and embrace your independence!
