Chapman is such an amazing place to learn. The environment is full of a unique academic, scholarly, and upbeat energy. Here’s a list of some great study spots on and off campus during this midterm season!
ON CAMPUS
1. Student Union
If you don’t mind background noise or enjoy studying with headphones, this is the place for you. You will be comfortable on the different sized couches, chairs, and tables and there are plenty of outlets to choose from. Another bonus is that you can borrow phone and laptop chargers from the student union desk! You can also situate yourself near the fireplace for extra comfort. This is a spot where you will definitely run into some friends, sorority sisters, and classmates, which can be a nice study break. And when you get hungry, you can easily grab a Jamba or fries from WOW.
2. Library
This may seem obvious, but there are a few features about the library that may be underutilized. Besides the huge tables with lots of room to spread out and the small secluded desk areas, there are private study rooms that can be reserved. This is a great option for group projects or group studying. Sign up in advance for these rooms as it gets closer to finals week!

3. Jazzman outdoor area & Indoor area
I find Jazzman’s to be an awesome environment to be productive. The tables are comfortable and spacious for work, and you have coffee and snacks right at your fingertips. It’s also nice to have the option to sit inside the cool Beckman Hall or enjoy the sunny outdoor seating. Similar to the Union, you are likely to see people you know coming in and out of class.
4. AF Patio
This is a gem of a spot tucked away on the second floor of Argyros Forum. Out the little door is a gorgeous patio with small tables and chairs that overlooks our beautiful campus. This spot is quiet, secluded and at certain times of the day fully shaded. It’s a great little getaway if you want a quiet and edgy spot to be inspired by the beauty of Chapman.
5. Attallah Piazza
Although the Piazza is often a happening spot with students and organizations tabling, music playing, and crowds of people, there is something charming about this center of our campus that is nice to read in. The grassy areas up the hill, or the funky rocks scattered around the fountain make great spots for some quick skimming or adding the final touches to a paper before heading to the printers. Plus the sounds of the fountains are so soothing!
OFF CAMPUS
1. Chapman Coffee House
This is one of my favorite places to go off campus. Not only is their chai tea latte better than Starbucks, this is one of the best vibes in town. When you walk in, you will instantly feel calm and focused no matter how much studying you have to do. Plus, there are inspirational quotes on the walls which are great motivation.
2. Orange Public Library
This is a great place to go if you want to mix up your study spot or find you aren’t productive when you see familiar faces while you work. This library is huge, with multiple floors, and plenty of great study spots. It’s also a good resource to keep in mind for research papers if you want to think outside the box and go beyond the resources Chapman has to offer.
3. Barnes & Nobles
Another great place with coffee and good energy. Sometimes it’s just nice to browse through the aisles and find inspiration from an unexpected author or source. This is a good place to go and focus because you feel like you are in a different world. There’s just something about book stores that let your mind escape.
4. Your Own Home
Sometimes the best answer is right in front of our eyes. Studying at home definitely has some benefits. I tend to do work in my bed where I am comfortable and can sprawl out all my books while having my planner nearby. Another good option is your desk (duh!), which is better for your posture. It can also be nice to be in the kitchen or backyard if you find yourself feeling trapped or claustrophobic in your bedroom. If you live in the dorms, the study rooms serve as a great place to escape your small room!
