Melissa Garrett
Year: First Year
Hometown and Your Favorite Thing About It: Carrollton, Texas and I really didn’t like it all that much. I did love Cane’s Chicken Fingers though.
Areas of Study and Why You Chose Them:
I’m a Creative Writing major because I would love to become an author and college professor someday. I also minor in Music because I just have a passion for it.
Extracurricular Activities/Jobs/Etc.:
Treasurer of Chatham’s Gay-Straight Alliance, and an active member of All-Faith Gathering.
Favorite Books:
Pretty much any book of poetry, but I also have a soft spot for the Vampire Kisses book series by Ellen Schreiber, just because Raven reminds me so much of myself.
Favorite Movies:
I love comedies like Billy Madison and School of Rock, but my favorite of all time is definitely The Craft.
Favorite TV Shows:
Degrassi, Degrassi, and more Degrassi…with the occasional Pawn Stars thrown in there.
Favorite Foods:
Barbeque all the way!
Favorite Musicians/Bands:
I listen to everything from old school Goth to industrial to symphonic metal. I really love Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Emilie Autumn, Rasputina, Nightwish, Tristania, and a lot of things people usually haven’t heard of. I also own every Green Day album.
Ultimate Friday Night:
Going out with friends to buy as many new clothes as I would like before going to an awesome concert and binging on junk food.
What’s your favorite thing to do for fun in the winter?
I’m pretty new to the whole concept of snowy winters, but I really just enjoy having tea or hot chocolate at a café while reading some poetry.
What do you love most about Pittsburgh?
The nice people. Everyone has treated me so great here and I love their open-mindedness.
What’s your favorite kind of music to sing?
I mostly do classical, but I also like singing rock.
If you could learn to play one instrument perfectly in one day, which instrument would you pick?
Definitely the piano, because there’s a lot you can do with that. I’ve been working on it.
Mini Playlist Time: What are three songs you think everyone on campus should listen to?
At the moment I would probably have to say…
“Looking Glass” by The Birthday Massacre
“Shadowtime” by Siouxsie and the Banshees
“Coin Operated Boy” by The Dresden Dolls
Childhood Dream Job:
Choir director or musical conductor.
Current Dream Job:
Published author, and vocalist or keyboardist in a successful band.
What do you love most about being a Chatham student?
I love that everyone is so supportive of each other and that Chatham has such a respectful community. I love it here!
