I love Rapunzel because my mom always used to tell me the story when I was extremely little.

My favorite fairy tale…. would probably be 1001 Arabian Nights because, after reading the book, I realized that Scheherazade gained autonomy for both herself and all the other young girls in her kingdom.

Shannon Ward, News/Lifestyle Writer

I am actually not very fond of modern fairy tales. I think that largely, the fairy tales in our culture perpetuate cliched gender roles for both men and women. Because they are aimed at a young audience, fairy tales teach children at a young age the stereotypical roles that men and women are meant to play.

My favorite fairy tale isn’t one of the so-called classics. Instead, it’s a short story called “Sand Crabs” by Alexander UrpĂ. An Arabian-inspired adventure set in the desert, it follows the Princess and the Guide, who must reach the village of Anazi in order to save a people. The tale is filled with amusing banter, threatening pirates, a captivating romance, and a thrilling climax – it’s hard to ask for more of any story! Fairy tales are well known for their ability to carry you away to another place, but this one found its way into my very soul.
