Last weekend I had the pleasure of working with two fellow DAAP students on a photo shoot in New York City. The theme of the shoot was “Ballerina in the City” and we really wanted to show the contrast between the softness of a ballerina and the grunge and harshness of the city. The shoot took place at various locations around Midtown. The model wore simple dark clothing but was adorned with a beautiful purple tutu that was handmade.Â
Â
The first photo that was taking was actually taken on the roof of my apartment building.  The model (Kate) danced all through high school so the dance moves came naturally to her. My roof was the perfect place to really capture the city. The buildings and wiring really add to the overall mood.
The next location we went to was this great loading dock door. I know what you’re thinking, “what is so great about a loading dock door?” It was actually a great find. The door was grey and pink and had had mirrors on it. The unique door added a “pretty” element to the shot and served the color scheme well.Â
From a loading dock door the only right decision would be to move to a fire station wouldn’t it? This lovely red door is the entrance to a local fire station. Luckily the firemen didn’t mind us blocking their door and the shot came out wonderful!
The last location we shot at was the highline. If you have never been to New York to see it for yourself it is hard o explain. It is basically an abandoned railroad track that was turned into a garden. It’s amazing and overlooks the city. The highline spans several blocks but we concentrated on taking pictures mostly in the meatpacking district.
All in all the shoot was amazing and the model was a great sport because it was 40 degrees that day! Being in the city really helps my creativity flow and I love being able to share the experiences with my fellow Bearcats!
