Boygenius, the female indie rock group composed of Lucy Dacus, Phoebe Bridgers, and Julien Baker, made an impressive debut at the Grammys on Sunday. They took home three awards and received six nominations. The supergroup has garnered a dedicated fanbase and consistently sold out shows across the country.
The trio, who joined the music scene at similar times, formed a close bond that led to the creation of their supergroup. Six years after their formation, Boygenius has taken this year’s Grammy’s by storm and gained 5.5 million monthly listeners on Spotify. The group has also openly spoken out against Anti-LGBT legislation and become iconic figures of queer and female music.
In 2018, Boygenius released their first EP, now the three women are some of the biggest stars in music. Their unique style has appealed to younger listeners. Throughout their songs they tell stories of heartbreak, self-exploration, and struggles of growing up queer. Together the songwriters create lyrics that capture the most painful emotions in a beautiful way.
Their only full-length album, “The Record” received praise from critics and quickly became a fan favorite. The album explores various styles of music while staying true to the group’s distinct alternative sound.
The indie rock group showed up to the Grammys in iconic white suits. They added pink boutonnieres, a nod to the lyric “I’ll be the boy with a pink carnation,” from their song “We’re in Love.” The group left the awards holding three trophies. “The Record” won Best Alternative Music Album, “Not Strong Enough” won Record of the year, and “Cool About It” won Best Alternative Music Performance.
Three awards meant all three members of the band had the opportunity to give a speech and boy did they deliver. Dacus expressed heartfelt gratitude for the child-like joy of receiving a Grammy. Julien expressed the love for the universal language of music and the family it creates. Bridgers finished off in a more lighthearted but equally adorable manner, thanking their families for getting them to this point.
Despite their success as a group, Boygenius announced they will be taking a hiatus for the foreseeable future. At the Grammy Awards on Sunday, Dacus explained that the group had always known they wouldn’t continue making music together forever. But they’ve expressed gratitude for their time spent together. They each have very successful solo careers and it seems they will continue to focus on their individual music for a while.
Each artist has proven their own reputation in the industry and gained mass respect. Pheobe Bridgers won an additional Grammy this year in the category Best Pop Duo/Group Performance on for her song “Ghost in the Machine,” on SZA’s award winning album. Dacus’ and Baker have also released three acclaimed albums and gained followings of their own.
I think I speak for a lot of people when I say we hope this isn’t the last of Boygenius. For now, I’ll be looking forward to seeing what they have in store for their solo careers.
