In my few months at uni I’ve come to realise that it isn’t all party, party, party, as many people suggest. I’m not saying there aren’t any parties because THERE ARE, but there’s work involved too, which people tend to forget about when describing uni life.

Workloads can become very stressful – especially when you’re so far away from home comforts. So what can you do to de-stress when there’s no home-cooked meal or warm bubble bath available to relax you?

There are of course many answers to this question, going for a quick walk, listening to music, but the thing that I find helps me the most when I’m getting bogged down with work is yoga. Unlike most other exercises, it’s completely non-competitive, and won’t leave you feeling angrier when you ‘lose’, because in yoga there is no such thing as losing.

It’s all about self-improvement, freeing your mind from everyday worries. So, where to get started? I won’t bore you by going through the poses, you can find these online or in books. A personal favourite of mine is ‘The Yoga Bible’ by Christina Brown. It gives you a step-by-step guide to all different poses, how to breath properly, and explains the benefits of them too.

While doing yoga all your troubles seem to flow away, and instead of concentrating on essay deadlines and reading books, your mind begins to focus on being in the moment. Now relax, and don’t get bogged down in all that work.
