One of Clarion’s most famous alumni is Frankie Edgar, a mixed martial artist originally from Toms River, New Jersey, who currently competes as a Featherweight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He competed as a Lightweight from 2005-2012. Frankie Edgar attended Clarion University, where he majored in Political Science, and wrestled for the Golden Eagles from 2001-2005. He qualified for the nationals all four years he was on the team. Two of Edgar’s fighting nicknames are The Answer and Rocky Balboa of MMA.
He is skilled in wrestling, boxing, and Muay Thai, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, which he has a black belt in. He is a UFC Lightweight Champion and won Fight of the Night (seven times), Knockout of the Night (one time), and Performance of the Night (two times) through the UFC. He also won the Fight of the Year title through the World MMA Awards for his fight against Gray Maynard and 2012 Fight of the Year Award through ESPN for his fight against Benson Henderson. In addition to this, Frankie Edgar won Fight of the Year for 2011 for his fight with gray Maynard, 2011 All-Violence Second Team, and 2014 All-Violence First Team through Sherdog, a Mixed Martial Arts website. Edgar’s current record is 21-5-1, meaning he has won 21 fights, lost five, and there was a draw for one.
