Whether it be from movies, other pop culture mediums, or that one girl from high school who posts photos that ruin the image for all the intelligent, strong, independent, kind women who populate the Greek community, there is a stigma around Greek life in this day and age. Â Nonetheless, this never hindered my desire to join a sorority once I reached college. Â After joining my chapter, I have grown into a better version of myself to say the least, and I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.
First and probably the most obvious, I have made several, new, lifelong friends. Â The girls I have met have already so strongly impacted my life while being my shoulders to cry on; motivating me to be a better student, friend, and woman; and joining me in treating myself to ice cream after chapter meetings. Â Even after I feel like I have absorbed all of the personalities in my chapter, I still continue to meet more and more women at each event we hold. Â Â My sorority has offered me the sincerest of friendships that continue to be enriched day by day, and I am forever grateful. Â
I have been given the opportunity to make a difference in my community. Â Although each chapter is required to complete a certain amount of service hours per semester, I find myself volunteering in any possible aspect beyond the service requirement for the sole purpose of helping others. Â Being involved in an organization that is so concerned with philanthropic service has cultivated a desire within me to spend my time serving those around me, and I have quickly realized that I am oh so lucky to have talent and time that I can share with those who need it most.
The leadership opportunities within a sorority are endless.  Whether you hold a position on executive council, step up to plan an event for the chapter, or simply set a positive example for your little, you are making a difference in your sisters’ lives.  These skills are also useful in everyday life, such as in group projects, future jobs, and other on-campus organizations. Â
The love I hold in my heart for my sorority is unimaginable.  In addition to all the aforementioned perks, it’s fun!  All of my best college memories involve my sorority in one way or another, and it blows my mind that they would not have been possible had I let the stereotypical image of a sorority girl change my mind about being one.  I have always wanted a sister, and now I have 200 and counting, and they are all such blessings.
