How to Navigate Your Way In a Coffee Shop

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Clemson chapter.

Since coffee has become the new craze there are several different types of drinks that you can order at coffee shops. While variety is a great thing, buying coffee can be a little intimidating, especially if you are not an avid coffee drinker. So here is your guide to navigating your local coffee house!

1. Espresso

This is one super concentrated shot of coffee. It tastes like a really strong cup of coffee in 2 oz glass. Espresso also has a really high caffeine content so it is a great way to get a lot of energy early in the morning or late at night during exam week.

2. Americano

An Americano is brewed like tea is, where there is bag of coffee that is steeped in hot water. It has the same amount of caffeine that a regular cup of coffee has but has a different flavor because it is steeped and not brewed.

3. Frappuccino

This drink is like coffee but in milkshake form. It is blended with milk, ice, and flavoring and is the best thing to get if you are a beginner coffee drinker, but it is not low in the calories.

4. Regular Coffee

The Classic cup of coffee that is just brewed in hot water for 3-4 minutes. Coffee flavor can vary dramatically because of the different types of roasted coffee beans. Coffee beans are roasted in the oven until they are the desired color (light brown to dark brown) A darker brew is a stronger cup of coffee and light brew has a lighter coffee flavor.

5. Latte

The latte is my favorite type of coffee drink because it is like a coffee hot chocolate. It is made with a shot of espresso (or more depending on the drink size), steamed milk and usually with some sort flavoring syrup.

6. Cappuccino

This coffee drink is very similar to a latte, but is made with twice the amount of espresso, then is covered with steamed milk.

7. Cold Brew Coffee

Cold brew coffee is the popular thing to get at a local coffee shop. It is made in a very complicated, chemistry-looking vat called a siphon and is made over a long period of time with ice cold water. It is a lot stronger than a regular cup of coffee and is more for the avid and experienced coffee drinkers.

8. Mocha

This is just a chocolate flavoring that is usually to a latte. There is also white mocha which is white chocolate flavoring. Both are good choices for beginner coffee drinkers.

I hope you guys will feel more confident ordering coffee now! Being apart of the coffee culture is a lot of fun and exciting especially if you are a foodie such as myself!
