This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Clemson chapter.
Roslie Shumate, President of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated.
Class of 2017
Engineering Major
Hometown: Greenville, SC

Why did you choose Clemson?

“Honestly because it had a very good Engineering program, but at the same time was very affordable. After I came here I saw a different side to Clemson. Even though I am from Greenville, 45 minutes down the road, I have never been around so much southern hospitality. The feeling at Clemson lets you know that you can be who you want to be. There are resources to achieve in every aspect of your life.”

Why did you choose Zeta Phi Beta?

“At first I did not want to be in a sorority, but the first 2 weeks at Clemson, I figured I should at least see what goes on. I knew if I did go Greek it would be part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, NPHC. At NPHC Orientation, the Zetas were so nice, genuine, and sincere. I would say they almost took me under their wing. They always asked how my day was, how my grades were, and how life was in general. I felt like I could fit right in with no problems. I researched them on a national level which told me that the programs that they take part in is really what I wanted to be a part of.”

What’s you favorite part about being Greek affiliated?

“Definitely the connections that I make throughout campus. There are a lot of people that I know but, I have a deeper relationship with because I’m Greek. And it goes further than being in the same organization. It means that we are all trying to make the world a better place.”

What do you most enjoy about being an engineering major?

“The fact that when my English doesn’t sound right, I can blame it on being an engineering major. Haha. I think in particular it has to do with this class that I’m taking that focuses on Human Factors and Ergonomics. I use the material that I learn from that class on a day-to-day basis. All I do is look at something and know that it’s engineered wrong, what the consequences are, and how to fix (0r at least have some sort of idea of how it should be fixed). For example, I work the concessions stand for National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and I kept talking about how we need a work system and I was bragging about how my pretzel system was genius.”

What’s something most of your peers don’t know about you?

“I think only my close friends know that I am really stubborn. Also, most of time when it seems like I made a sarcastic joke, I’m not making a joke at all. I’m telling the truth.”
