Save the Tatas: How to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Save the Tatas: How to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month

I don’t know about you, but I can’t believe its October already. That means we’re

finally saying goodbye to summer, and saying hello to Fall! That also means it is

a month where we focus on a very important issue- Breast Cancer Awareness.

Breast Cancer is something that as women we just can’t ignore. In fact, the

American Cancer Society predicts that there will be 231,840 new cases of

invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in 2015. In addition, 40,290

women will die in 2015 as a result of breast cancer. I have had family and friends

who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, and it is scary to think that they

could become part of that number. Many of you probably have already lost

someone to breast cancer. This is why it’s important to be proactive, and support

the cause.

There is a lot that you can do this month to help raise awareness:

1. Participate in a breast cancer run

It’s good exercise for you, and your

money goes towards helping find a cure and helping people with breast

cancer that need it.

2. Be proactive!

Don’t wait until something could be wrong. Perform regular

self-breast exams and don’t miss check-ups. Sometimes it might be an

uncomfortable experience, but it’s worth it to make sure if something is

wrong you can catch it early.

3. Check out items that you can wear to help raise awareness and draw attention to the cause.

Clemson’s own Dabo Swinney is a big supporter of

raising awareness, see what he has to say and where you can find some

4. Check out some different products online that give portions of their profit back to breast cancer.

You can buy a pair of cute shoes, or a new necklace, and support finding a cure at the same time!

5. Try to live a healthy lifestyle.

The American Cancer Society notes that

your diet and physical activity levels could have an effect on the likelihood

of developing breast cancer. Don’t panic-this doesn’t mean if you haven’t

gone to the gym in awhile that you’re going to develop breast cancer. It

simply means that eating healthier and trying to stay active will help keep

your body strong and put you at less risk of developing anything

detrimental to your health.

6. Get involved right here at Clemson!

Zeta Tau Alpha’s “Think Pink” campaign will have many different events throughout the month that will

allow you to help raise awareness and money for the case! Be a part of it!

The best thing we can do is to educate others and ourselves. Look out for

your moms, your grandmothers, aunts, sisters, and friends. Make sure the

women in your life know you care about them by looking out for their

health. Go pink this October to save the tatas!
