On September 22, the Primetime Emmys honored TV’s biggest stars. Neil Patrick Harris hosted the most watched Emmys since 2005, and all of the biggest stars came out to celebrate. From red carpet moments and dresses to acceptance speeches and memorials, there were certainly some memorable moments. In case you missed it, or it you just want to re-live the moment, here are the 5 best moments from this year’s Emmy awards:
1. Amy Poehler and Tina Fey heckled Neil Patrick Harris.
What could be better than an appearance by the hilarious duo at the Emmys? Pretty much nothing. After the show got off to a late start, Poehler and Fey sat in the front row wearing 3D glasses and eating popcorn, heckling NPH about twerking. Fey started out by telling him to take his pants off, followed by Poehler’s plea “Twerk it! Work that twerk.” Making fun of Miley Cyrus’s now infamous twerking at the VMA’s, Fey complained, “I thought an award show involved twerking.” On why they were wearing 3D glasses, Fey said it was so they could see the host’s business up close. Once they finished heckling, Poehler and Fey stumbled (literally) onto the stage to present the first award.
2. Will Farrell brought his three adorable kids onstage with him.
The adorable bunch presented the two biggest awards of the night, Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Drama Series. Farrell wore shorts and a t-shirt, and his kids wore soccer uniforms. A little casual for the Emmys? Maybe, but if anyone can pull it off, it’s Will Farrell. The comedian scolded his son for playing Angry Birds onstage, then proceeded to tell the audience that Helen Mirren and Maggie Smith had dropped out 45 minutes ago and he “couldn’t find childcare.” “We had a soccer game, a neighbor’s birthday party, a nut allergy. I didn’t do my hair,” he said, as Tina Fey doubled over laughing. Between the two awards, Farrell said to his son, “You have to go to the bathroom?! I asked you backstage if you had to go to the bathroom.”
3. “Modern Family” continued Outstanding Comedy winning streak.
The ensemble show has now won the category four years in a row, beating out nominees “Veep”, “The Big Bang Theory”, “Girls”, “30 Rock”, and “Louie”. Is four years in a row a little excessive? No, because they have deserved it every year. Lily is the sassiest child ever, so the show basically deserves a win for casting her alone. Plus, the story lines are hilarious and Sofia Vergara is a gem. Cam and Mitch? America’s favorite couple. Do we need any more reasons? In other news, the show’s creator, Steven Levitan looks like Ray Romano. Seriously, Google it. Levitan also made a reference to the memorial-packed Emmys, saying that it was the “saddest Emmys of all time.” He later said, “All those people are very deserving, and other people are deserving too. I thought it was too sad. Poor Neil Patrick Harris, who was so brilliant, had to keep digging himself out of the holes dug by these sad moments, time and time again. It was very difficult.”
4. Derek Hough won best choreography.
Okay, so most people probably don’t care about this one as much, but he is the most adorable human being and a truly amazing dancer. He definitely deserved the recognition outside of the Creative Arts Emmys. He was incredibly grateful for the award, practically doing flips backstage afterward, and no one deserves it more than him. After performing then wining the award, he said, “To perform in front of all the amazing people… and then immediately after win it, like you can’t really, it doesn’t get much better than that, it’s pretty awesome!” He’s too cute. Plus, have you watched “Dancing with the Stars”? He’s talented and looks great with his shirt off. He also brought his famous sister Julianne instead of a date, which means he’s most likely single. What could be better than that? In other more ridiculous news, Buzz Feed is now comparing Hough to Amy Poehler, complaining that she has not won an Emmy and he has. Different categories, people.
5. Neil Patrick Harris sang and danced.
Did we really expect anything else? Surprisingly, he did not dance during the opening, which, in addition to Fey and Poehler, featured past Emmy hosts giving advice. It wasn’t until later in the show that NPH had his big number, calling it “The Number in the Middle of the Show.” Sarah Silverman, who crooned the word “vagina,” and Nathan Fillion from “Castle” joined him. The dance also featured disco music and dancers in gold dresses. The number wasn’t exactly brilliant, but it’s what Harris does best. The host has received some negative comments since the show, but he did bring in the most viewers in eight years, so I’d say you’re doing pretty well, NPH.
