Nine Incredibles 2 Predictions Based on the New Trailer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CMU chapter.

It’s no secret that lots of people are excited for Incredibles 2. The Incredibles was our childhood, and we’ve been waiting for a sequel since it came out in 2004. Now, fourteen years later, trailers are being released, plot is being speculated about, and people are going wild. Here are nine of my Incredibles 2 predictions based on the latest trailer.

  1. The fight with the Underminer goes terribly wrong

I’m pretty confident about this prediction. In the trailer, Mr. Incredible gets sucked into a tube, a train derails, and there’s a picture of policemen holding the Parr family at gunpoint. They were flying high at the end of the first movie, but the sequel is going to start with failure to make their eventual victory taste sweeter.

  1. We will get more info about the superhero laws and lawsuits

There are plenty of hints that the movie will delve into the legal situation of superheroes. Elastigirl bemoans the fact that she has to break the law to fix the law. The derailed train parallels the incident in the first movie that caused the government to ban superheroes. Elastigirl’s new boss talks about how they have to right the wrongs of the past and make the public see supers in a more positive light. It’s a tangled legal situation, and it will be interesting to see how they deal with it.

  1. Frozone’s wife won’t be seen until the end of the movie

Frozone’s incredibly popular and quotable wife can already be heard at the end of the new trailer. But there’s no way Disney is going to answer the question of her appearance right away—I think that she’ll be heard off-screen a couple of times before making a grand, probably humorous entrance near the end of the movie.

  1. The parents told Dash to take Jack Jack and run, but someone prevents him

In the trailer, Dash is running through with Jack Jack in his arms, but he keeps going through portals that put him right back where he started. I think someone is trying to prevent them from getting away. Is it Screenslaver? Is it Elastigirl’s new boss? Is it Jack Jack himself, gaining yet another superpower? Only time will tell.

  1. Violet will be the most reluctant to be a superhero

Elastigirl is clearly out and about kicking ass and taking names. Mr. Incredible’s storyline in the first movie revolved around his desire to be a hero again. Dash says being a superhero “defines who he is”, and he treated the whole first movie adventure like a crazy vacation. Violet, on the other hand, was much more aware and scared of the danger they were in. She was also seen throwing her super suit against a wall—it seems safe to assume that her transition to becoming a superhero might be a bit more rocky than the others.

  1. Mr. Incredible’s rant about math is symbolic

The conversation between Dash and Mr. Incredible is funny, but it could be deeper than that. Dash says his teachers don’t want him to do it the old way, they want him to do it in a new way. Mr. Incredible gets really upset, insisting that “you can’t change math!” Is this just the stressed ranting of a father faced with calculus, or does it represent Mr. Incredible’s discomfort with the changes in his life and his inability to adapt?

  1. Tony Rydinger, Rick Dicker, and Mirage will appear

Tony Ridinger and Violet’s potential romance needs to be dealt with, so it’s safe to say he’ll be in at least one scene. Rick Dicker is in charge of relocating supers, and since the Parr’s house exploded at the end of the first movie, he needs to be around to smooth their move and help them adjust to the new status quo of their lives. Mirage doesn’t necessarily have a reason to appear, but she was such a big part of the first movie that I find it hard to believe that she won’t be present at all, even if it’s only from the other side of a phone call or in a video. The real question is, will Kari the incredible babysitter make a reappearance?

  1. Elastigirl will return to her original suit in the climactic battle

If you’ve seen any of the trailers, you’ve probably noticed that Elastigirl is sporting some cool new threads. But I’m fairly confident that she’ll be back in the iconic red and orange suit by the final battle. The matching outfits represent family unity, and there’s no way the movie will end with the family separated, even so superficially. Besides, Edna Mode made her suit, and you can only fight the ultimate evil wearing the best.

  1. The moral seems like it will be anti-technology, but there’ll be a twist

This is more of a hope than a solid prediction. The villain of Incredibles 2, the screenslaver, is incredibly cool looking, but the “hypnotizing people with their screens” plot seems a bit contrived. The writers already hashed over “oh no technology bad” with Syndrome in the first movie, where the Parr family’s innate abilities trumped Syndrome’s intelligence and attempts to even the playing field. (Kind of a weird moral in retrospect). Screenslaver is even more heavy handed, so I hope they twist his villainy in a different direction and surprise the audience.

Who knows if any of these will come true? It’s possible that another trailer will come out and redefine everything I thought I knew about this movie. Regardless, whatever happens in Incredibles 2, I’m sure I’ll be I’ll walk out of the theater with a huge grin on my face.
