Tell me about Hypnotic Control. “Hypnotic Control is CNU’s hip-hop dance club. We perform all around campus at different events such as Greek philanthropy events, Midnight Madness, and most recently CNU’s Got Talent during Welcome Week. We also host our own event “Unleash the Talent” in February, which we put on in collaboration with Altered Xpressionz and CNU Storm. Look out for us on October 7th at ASA’s Rock-A-Thon.”
When did you start dancing? “I started dancing when I was two, so 18 years ago. I’ve done ballet, tap, jazz, modern, hip-hop, and contemporary. My favorite is tap because there are so many different ways to create rhythms and express yourself.”
What has been your favorite memory with Hypnotic Control so far? “My favorite memory is when we all get together outside of practice or performances and just hang out. We eat food, watch dance videos, and collaborate on new ideas.”
What have you learned from being an out-of-state student? “It’s different than you expect. There are days when it’s good to be far away from home because it forces you to make your own family on campus, but then there are other days when you wish you could go home, but it is four hours away. I definitely think it is preparing me for the future because I already know I can survive far from home.”
So you said you can survive away from home. Do you like to cook? “I do like to cook! It’s just finding the time and the means to make something. I normally resort to easy things like sandwiches, but on the weekends my roommate and I will make one nice meal and invite friends over. We’re big Pinterest fans, so that’s where we gather most of our inspiration.”
What’s your favorite Einstein’s order? “It’s nothing exciting. Just an iced caramel macchiato.”
If you could travel anywhere, where would you go? “I would go to Italy and try and find where my great-grandmother grew up. Also, I would just eat my way through Italy.”
