In a season where flowers are blooming and the temperatures are finally enjoyable, it’s good to get outside and absorb the sunlight that comes with the arrival of Spring. However, Spring has a dark side, a sinister, menacing element that sucks every ounce of joy from the whimsical season: pollen. For those inflicted with allergies hindering them from experiencing a beautiful season, there is an alternative: movies. Film is a great way to celebrate Spring vibes, even if stepping foot in the pollen transforms you into a sneezy specimen.

The princess bride

The Princess Bride is a fun and campy film that follows Princess Buttercup and her lost love, meanwhile a villainous pirate is roaming the kingdom. Though this is a children’s film, the light and airy energy that it gives off is perfect for Spring. Bonus points for the nostalgia!

The bling ring

Initially released in 2013, The Bling Ring was the first film that now famous director Sofia Coppola took charge on. Based on a true story, this film follows the tale of Beverly Hills teens that routinely rob the houses of high-dollar celebrities. The movie is filled with bright visuals and glamor; it’s the perfect mix of bright, airy, California vibes and maximalist visuals, making it a perfect flick to watch as flowers are blooming.

The wedding singer

This movie is Adam Sandler at the peak of his career. The Wedding Singer follows a young man who was left at the altar, something he reminded of every night at work because he performs at weddings. One night, he meets a young woman who is trying to plan her own wedding, and the two quickly bond, motivating the man to win her over without crossing any lines before she goes through with her wedding. This movie is fun and bright, as well as encourages its audience to root for the underdog. Rom-coms radiate hope, and Spring does as well.

the devil wears prada

Meryl Streep saying “Florals? For Spring? Groundbreaking” automatically earns The Devil Wears Prada a spot on this list. Another movie that gets the audience rooting for the underdog, this film is iconic. With a star-studded cast including Emily Blunt, Anne Hathaway, and THE Meryl Streep, it’s a movie that can be watched over and over.

Midsommar

Switching tones from romcoms and chick flicks, Midsommar is an A24 film that tracks an American couple going attending a Swedish festival that slowly becomes sinister. Mixing bright aesthetics with dark themes, Midsommar is the perfect Spring watch for horror fans from Sweden to the U.S. and everywhere else!

la la land

Though it’s a musical, this film is also traumatizing to watch (that might be a little dramatic, but film so effectively achieves what it set out to). This screen musical follows a couple through the struggles they each experience between their relationship and their careers. This movie is a visual feast and mimics all the colors that are worth admiring in the Spring time. It also explores change and growth, inevitable occurrences of the Spring season.

wicked

Another musical that is doused with color symbolism, Wicked is a film that explores identity and politics. However, the film’s overall uplifting and empowering tone undeniably echoes the burst of rejuvenation we get from the warmer weather every year (and honestly any excuse to watch this movie is a good one).

pretty in pink

Back on track with our rom-coms, Pretty in Pink follows the story of a poor, unpopular teen on her journey to win over the school hotshot, meanwhile, her best friend, Duckie, is desperately in love with her. A love triangle and a film that keeps you rooting for what’s right, this movie is a MUST to reach maximum Spring vibes.

spring binging and other shanagains

Whatever you do this Spring, ENJOY IT. With such nice weather, watching these movies should be plan B. There’s only a short amount of time before the moderate weather in the 60s and 70s morphs into the torturous and humid 90s, so embrace the nature this Spring, even if you are naturally a homebody.
