I saw Dr. Sleep this weekend with my roommate and let me tell you – so good. If you’re not a fan of horror, I would still recommend this to you because it’s not quite scary. It’s creepy, certainly, but I wasn’t scared while watching it at any point. That being said, here is my overall review for Doctor Sleep! Spoiler-free, as always.
I’m going to start off the review by talking about the acting performances because they are amazing. Ewan McGregor, Rebecca Ferguson, Kyleigh Curran were all stunning in their portrayal of their respective characters. McGregor and Curran played off of each other especially well and Ferguson, who plays the antagonist of the movie, really made me dislike and fear her.Â
The plot is the next thing I’m going to touch on, as I had not read the book of Doctor Sleep, before watching. I had seen The Shining, but years earlier so my memories of it were a little hazy. That being said, you don’t need to know its predecessor by heart to enjoy the movie. Doctor Sleep definitely references its predecessor and pays homage to it. The plot is fairly easy to follow and has you engaged with it for the entirety of the movie.Â
One issue I did have with the movie was, once again, the runtime. This movie ran exactly at 2hr 31min and while it didn’t feel that long, I felt there were some parts that could’ve been edited down to make it just a little bit shorter. Overall, Doctor Sleep was a movie with a creepy and unsettling theme but it is not a movie that will leave you afraid to sleep at night. It will leave you with questions about where we go after we die and what you would do for immortality. It is a movie that I will definitely keep thinking about for the next couple of days because of how good it was.Â
