The Problem with the “Secret Menu”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Coastal Carolina chapter.

Working as a barista has taught me that I need to have patience. Mostly because most people don’t know what to order, but will still proceed to walk up to the register and blankly stare at the menu as if there isn’t a huge line starting behind them. Another thing is making drinks. It’s probably one of my favorite things to do (except for getting on “frap bar” because once you get on there, you don’t EVER get off) because I love to see my customers reactions when they take the first sip. However, making drinks does have it’s cons.

And you wanna know whyyyy !?!?!

It’s because of the “Secret Menu”. First off, I want customers to realize that you cannot just order a drink that’s not on the menu and expect the cashier and baristas to know what the heck they are. It would be ‘totes’ helpful if you bring a recipe with you. We know about what’s on the menu, nothing more. Starbucks doesn’t send out mass emails about new combinations of drinks to all baristas.

Another thing is this: the “Secret Menu” is NOT something that was created by Starbucks. It was literally created by the consumers. If you aren’t sure what this hidden menu is, let me reiterate it to you. The “Secret Menu” is a menu that consists of drinks made from different combinations of flavors from Starbucks. They’re also overly expensive because with every flavor you add, the more it costs. Also 90% of them are sweeter than sweet and will probably give you high blood pressure.

If you saw some article on Facebook or Twitter about some “super dope” drink from Starbucks, more than likely it was created by another customer randomly mixing flavors together and thinking they’re Professor X because they think they’ve created the best thing ever since sliced bread. The “Pink drink” is actually probably the best from this menu (in my opinion) so I’m not super against the menu.

But please realize that it is sometimes frustrating for baristas to make these drinks because some of them are super time consuming and usually take a LOT OF SYRUP to make so half of your cup is filled with heart attack and cardiac arrest. They also won’t always look like the picture you might’ve shown the barista because every one of us is different when it comes to making things. It’s just sometimes how things work.

However, just know that every single barista is willing to make you happy and satisfy your needs when it comes to your caffeine intake. It is not only our job, but our pleasure.
