5 Fun Activities to De-Stress at Colby

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Colby chapter.

Colby is amazing. And also kind of stressful. Looking for some ways to de-stress beyond partying? Here are some little known—but awesome things— that Colby offers that are great ways to de-stress!

1. Whittling Wednesdays: Okay, so this is very cool. Never whittled before? That’s fine! Learn how to carve a spoon or a figurine or an animal with these super cool people. Once you pick up whittling, it can be really relaxing just to take your mind off that impossible English essay you’re working on. Plus, you can make something really cool/useful/pretty!

2. Climbing Wall Nights: This is super awesome! Every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, the Colby Mountaineering Club hosts climb nights at the rock wall in the gym from 7-9:30. There is an incredible feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction when you successfully scale a 30-foot wall. Plus, exercise releases endorphins, which automatically make you happier! The best part is, you don’t have to stay for the whole 2.5 hours. You can come and go as you please. Many times, I’ll head down to the AC at 8 for a study break, do a few climbs, and be back in the library by 8:45 to finish my work.

3. The Pottery Studio: Pottery is a great activity to help relieve some stress! Pay $15. Then have unlimited access to the pottery studio! You can go anytime you want. Before class. During lunch. At 4am on a Tuesday morning. You can learn how to throw a pot, make pinch pots, and practice creating really cool bowls and mugs. And, the best part is that you get to paint anything you make! Did I mention pottery makes great (and inexpensive) Christmas presents? Never done pottery before? No problem!! A couple of times a month, the club heads give lessons on how to make different types of pottery.

4. The Outing Club: Almost every weekend, the outing club does something AWESOME. Feel like you need to get off campus and/or want to explore other parts of Maine? Sign up for one of their trips! In the winter, they organize ski trips. In the fall, there are weekly opportunities to go hiking, rock-climbing, and/or canoeing. Being outdoors in nature is always a great de-stressor. Plus, you’ll get to see some amazing Maine views!

5. And of course, DILLAS: So maybe it’s late and you don’t have time to whittle, climb, make a pot or go climb a mountain. What can you do? Well, every once in a while, a quesadilla from the Spa is exactly what you need. Sometimes, after a long night of studying, a good BBQ or buff chick dilla will hit the spot.
