Don’t you just wish, sometimes, for a little bit o’ love? An extra smile or enthusiastic wave from a friend can really make your day. That friend, for many, is Alex Baier. You’ve probably seen Alex scooting around campus on his long board, heading to a rehearsal, or on a run with his cross-country team mates. Regardless of how busy he is you always get a wave, a smile, and (if you’re lucky) a hug. If celebrity is measured in positivity, then Her Campus definite has our guy. But don’t let yourself be fooled- Alex a pretty intense guy

Hi Alex
Hi Ariella!

Tell us a little bit about yourself
My name is Alex Baier, and I’m from New Hampshire. I’m a psychology major with a concentration in neuroscience, chemistry minor, and I’m pre-med. I’m also a triplet—I have two sisters. You should probably mention that part.

You are very involved in music on campus, correct?
Yep! I’m the music directory of the Colby Eight, and I take piano and voice lessons. I actually decided to take voice lessons because of the Colby Eight- I auditioned for the Colby Eight without having ever sung before, and after getting in I thought ‘well, I want to improve my voice for the group,’ so I signed up for voice lessons. I also play trumpet in the orchestra, which is fun.

The name Baier was already familiar in the Colby Eight, was it not?
Yes, my older brother Kevin graduated last year. He was actually the music director last year and the year before that—so, the Baier dynasty continues! It was great having him around last year, and there were definitely some funny incidents. One night  I was walking up the senior apartments to hang with my brother, there was some girl that had left Averil just as I was coming up to Averil, and I could tell she felt kind of uncomfortable ‘cause I was walking like 20 feet behind her so I jogged up and caught up with her to break the tension (which was stupid cause I thought, at least at the time, that Colby’s campus was relatively safe). And as I started talking she was like, “wait…I know that voice…you have to be Kevin’s brother Alex.” That was ridiculous. I couldn’t believe that she recognized my voice.

You are also an athlete: can you tell us a little bit about you involvement with sports both on and off campus?
I’m a member of the cross-country team at Colby. I had a pretty bad back injury this fall, though, so I missed a big part of the season. I also Nordic ski. I was really competitive in high school, and I’m actually thinking about trying out for the team next year. I’m just a generally pretty outdoorsy sort of person, so I’ll always find an excuse to be outside and be active.

Going back to your pre-med studies: do you have any cool post-grad plans?
I really want to be a surgeon. I’m thinking maybe cardio-thoracic, but that would mean I would have to live in a city and I’m more of a country guy. So…I might do something a little less specialized. I do have a cool internship lined up for over janplan, though. I’m going to be shadowing an ophthalmologist here in Waterville for 120 hours. He’s actually a really renowned cataract surgeon, which is cool—so I’m really excited to be here to do that and to be with people

You are such a friendly person. I know (from personally experience) that if see someone across the quad, you will scream at the top of your lungs until they look over at you. There has been a lot of talk recently of problems in the ethos of the Colby community. What, if any changes, would you like to see?
You know me too well! I do wish that colby’s culture on the weekends didn’t revolve so heavily around alcohol. I feel like a lot of people at Colby feel like they can’t go out unless they’ve had a few drinks, and it’s such as shame that we can’t go out and meet people while sober. I would love to see the role that alcohol plays at Colby reduced, and I feel like that would also have an impact on the other issues that Colby is looking at, such as sexual misconduct on campus. I also just really love saying hi to people I care about—but you already said that!

If you already know Alex, then none of this comes as a surprise. If you’ve never met, then it’s definitely worth your while. Stop by, wave, introduce yourself—you are sure to be met in kind!
