“What are your plans for break?” has been the new conversation starter for many of us, given that our very first mini break/long weekend of the semester is approaching. I know this has been my default phrase for sparking up a conversation when I cross paths with someone in the Spa. From the people I’ve chatted with so far, it doesn’t seem like many of them had any plans set in stone. Luckily, I’ve created a list of restaurants that you can easily visit if you’re trying to get some fresh air and step off campus this break. Augusta is only 20 minutes away, and the food at these five restaurants is definitely worth the time.

State Lunch

The dim orbs of light hanging from the ceiling combined with the hip graffiti art on the walls create an urban, nighttime bar-like ambiance. Most importantly, the food is absolutely uh-mazing. Period. I’ve personally dined here twice since JanPlan and I’m definitely still craving their crispy and perfectly golden garlic fries. They also serve ramen here, which is surprising because I haven’t found a single authentic noodle shop around Maine since coming to Colby. As a longtime ramen connoisseur, I can confidently say that the ramen noodle bowls here are some of the best I’ve ever had. They allow reservations for 6 or more parties!

Personal Favorites: Shio Ramen Bowl, Vietnamese Banh Mi (sandwich), Kimchi Burger

Cushnoc Brewing Co.

This industrial-styled brewpub is a chic-er alternative to Portland Pie. It’s most well-known for its wood-fired pizzas or “pies,” but they also serve a selection of snacks such as baked nachos as well as a variety of salad options. I’ve never been here before, but from reviews and recommendations from friends, I’m making it a goal to dine here at least once before I graduate.

The Oak Table and Bar

The clean and inviting atmosphere of the restaurant is a great place to dine-in for an evening during break. This restaurant is a bit more on the expensive side, but the exquisite dishes are fresh and delicious. From the citrus salad appetizer to the steak and oyster entrees to the chocolate mousse cake, each meal was rich in flavor and crafted with such delicacy. They have small plate options that change daily, so there isn’t really a standard menu.

Otto’s on the River

The unique decor and beautiful riverfront view is a great place to stop by if you have time during break. I’ve never been here, but a couple people have recommended this restaurant, so I decided to add it on here. The food is mostly seafood based, but there are also American comforts and vegan-friendly options. Based on the reviews online, I’d recommend making a reservation ahead of time if possible!

Panera Bread

And if you’re just looking for a healthier alternative to fast-food chains, then Panera is for you. Back at home, Panera is my go to place to study and get work done or hang out with friends over a tasty meal. Great place to grab food or dine in for a quick and affordable meal.

Personal Favorites: Chipotle Chicken Avocado Melt, Mediterranean Veggie Sandwich, Spicy Thai Salad with Chicken

Remember to stay safe, have fun, and eat well this upcoming break!
