I can’t believe how fast my senior spring is flying back. It seems like just yesterday that we got back from JanPlan break. With three midterms this week, I thought it would be a good idea to procrastinate and reminisce about my favorite Colby trends, or the items that the classic Colby student has. I’ve even gained an appreciation for many of these items, including subarus. Don’t tell my friends I said that!
1. Bean Boots. Before I came to Colby, my father was the only person besides a catalogue model I’d ever seen sporting these boots. Whether it’s the classic hunting boots or the shearling lined signature boots, Bean Boots are a Colby must. With snow coming down as late as mid-March, we need good boots to keep our feet dry!
2. Wicked Good Moccasins. After trudging through our snowy campus, we all need a pair of cozy slippers to put on when we get back to our rooms. When it’s not snowing, leave it to Colby girls to wear these mocs to the library, to the dining hall, and even to class.
3. Dansko Clogs. I’ve always classified danskos as schlepy adult shoes; before I came to college I think the youngest person I’d ever seen wearing these shoes was a medical student doing her residency at the hospital where I used to volunteer. However, Colby has given me a new appreciation for danskos. Not only are they good for nearly any type of weather, they’re super comfortable, and have I mentioned, they make your legs look longer and thinner?
4. Barbour Jacket. In the fall and spring, you can be sure to spot both girls and boys wearing green Barbour coats. Though they’re not the warmest, Barbours are great because they go with every possible outfit. Just be sure to put your name in yours so no one accidentally takes it at bar night.
5. The North Face Metropolis Parka. What better than a long, puffy down coat to keep you warm during the winter months? Plus, it makes a great seat cushion in class. These coats are so popular that three out of six of us at our meeting the other day wore it. In the same color. Ultimate #colbygirlproblems.
6. Lululemon Workout Gear: Alright, so maybe Lulu Lemon’s market value plummeted yesterday, but can you think of a brand that makes fitness more fashionable? The best part about lululemon is that you can wear your yoga pants to class and not look like a slob.
7. Water Bottles: I’m sitting in the library as I write this article, and I can’t help but notice how many people are drinking from reusable water bottles. The typical Colby Collegiette personalizes her nalgene/camelbak from the bookstore with stickers of her favorite bands, vacation spots, and clothing brands.
8. Green Mountain Coffee Cups: Colby students are up late and need their caffeine to get through the long days. I conservatively estimate that eight out of ten Colby students carries a spa coffee/tea cup to class at least once a week.
9. Flannels: Obviously, the woodsmen team kills it when it comes to flannels. Still, you can spot anyone from a laxbro to a hipster wearing a flannel shirt. Who knew we had so many lumberjacks around here?
10. Subaru/Jeep/Honda CRV. My friends and I tried to determine the most popular car in the parking lots. We didn’t count, but we think these three take the win for top transportation vehicles.
11. Patagonia Retro-X Vest: I think this might be my favorite Colby staple. This fuzzy vest is perfect for chilly days. I wear mine all the time. It’s super cute and New England chic!
