Dorm Sweet Dorm: How To Make Your Dorm Room Cozy in the Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Colby chapter.

Winter is still in full force, and now more than ever, no one wants to bundle up to leave the dorms to go elsewhere on campus. Here are some tips and suggestions to make your dorm room the coziest place on campus.

1. The comfiest place to be is your bed. Consider re-evaluating your mattress pad and linens. Is your bed warm enough? Do you sleep near a window? Try flannel sheets or add another comforter or quilt to maximize bedtime comfort. To use your bed during the day, add a body pillow on the long side to create a couch feeling. Add some throw pillows to decorate! Have a few throw blankets handy for when you want to cozy up and watch some Netflix without messing up your sheets.

2. One of the best ways to arm up during the winter is to drink something hot. If you’re not feeling like trudging through the snow to get a coffee or tea from the Spa, invest in a teakettle or a coffee maker in your room. The teakettle doubles as a water boiler to make ramen or even Annie’s mac n’ cheese!

3. The fluorescent overhead lights in dorms can be harsh and too bright. Try hanging Christmas lights around your room for dimmer light. You could also get a combination of both floor and desk lamps to give your room a softer atmosphere.

4. Dorm rooms tend to get really dirty, especially if you don’t have a suite and you’re walking in your room with your Bean Boots covered in snow. To keep your room cleaner, get a shoe tray to leave your shoes in so they don’t dirty your room. Try some amazingly comfortable L.L Bean Slippers or a soft rug to keep your feet warm and cozy.

5. If you use your desk chair a decent amount, try a cushion on the bottom, back, or both! Make your desk chair a seat you’ll actually want to sit in.

6. Lastly, before making any major changes to the room, make sure to check with the roomie(s) to make sure everything is okay for all sharing the room.

Have fun and stay cozy!
