You’re sitting in your room on a blah night and you’ve binge-watched all of the Gilmore Girls that you can handle. You want to listen to some music, but you don’t have anything in particular you want to listen to or you’re not in the mood for anything you already have. Sound like a familiar situation? I’ve been there, too, which is why I compiled this list of five songs you should look up and listen to right now to get you out of your music funk:
- “Nothing Stays the Same” by Luke Sital-Singh: My sister showed me this song at a time when I was really bored with my music, and I’m so glad she did. She found this song on the “Stomp and Holler” playlist on Spotify, and true to the name of the playlist, this song will make you want to stomp and holler every time you hear it. It starts out slow, so when you first listen, don’t let the beginning throw you. Once you get to the chorus and the middle of the song, you’ll want to sing at the top of your lungs (I want to sing it in the rain for some reason), laugh, cry, and press repeat all at the same time.
- “Don’t Wait” by Mapei: I love this song because it combines a Caribbean/tropical vibe with a hip-hop feel, creating an overall happy, easy-to-listen-to-100-times song. The mix of Mapei’s raspy voice and the robotic EDM voice is an awesome fusion I haven’t heard before. I also love the lyrics of the song, which is something I’m very picky about when choosing music. One of my favorite lyrics is: “We have a friendship, no one can contest it, and not to mention, I respect you with my all.” I know, I know—you’re thinking it’s cheesy. Reading it now it does sound cheesy, but the way that Mapei delivers it in “Don’t Wait” never makes it feel the least bit cliché or eye-roll inducing.
- “Overcome” by Tora feat. Potato Potato: I was thrown off when I first heard this song, especially the very beginning because I thought I was back in the 20s. But, once I got into it, I realized how awesome this song is. “Overcome” starts off as a super chill song and Tora’s voice can put anyone to sleep. The best part of the song, though, is when the banjos and the beat come in. They keep the cool, mellow-but-upbeat vibe of the song but add another level that makes me want to listen to it over and over and play it for all my friends. There’s also some electric sounds in this song that make it unique and not just another cool song.
- “Thunder Clatter” by Wild Cub: I heard this song over the summer and it immediately put a smile on my face. For some reason whenever I listen to it, I feel like I’m in “The Lion King” or in a jungle. “Thunder Clatter” is my favorite happy/upbeat jam right now and it will get you tapping your foot the second you press play. The song is predictable enough that you can just listen and dance, but also unique/interesting enough that it’s cool to show your friends and play when you have people over.
- “Yellow Flicker Beat” by Lorde: I think we probably all know Lorde by now because, let’s face it, she’s the ish. But, the release of her new song for the new “Hunger Games” movie was super under wraps, or at least I think so. I wasn’t a huge fan of “Yellow Flicker Beat” at first, but after a few listens, I grew to really like it. It has the classic Lorde beat and spooky feel, but it’s definitely different than the songs from her first album. The song is pretty weird at first, with Lorde just humming and then her voice coming in over it. But, once the beat comes in, it’s a solid jam that I like to listen to when I’m in an angsty or somewhat angry mood.
