Going from a #HotGirlSummer to a #HotGirlSemester

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Colby chapter.

Don’t just be the baddest during the summer, but be the baddest in the books! These steps will help you keep that bad b*tch vibe throughout the semester especially during finals szn.

What it dooooo hotties! Thank you to our good sis Megan Thee Stallion (H-Town, hold it down) for coining the term Hot Girl and #HotGirlSummer. With this term she became the unofficial symbol and inspiration of a HOTGIRL by showing us what it looks like to be confident, have fun and live our truth to the fullest and baddest potential by unapologetically being yourself in the summer. But now the leaves have changed colors and fallen off, the sun is hiding for the majority of the day, and the snow is at an all time high leaving us to question; how do we be a baddie in the winter? How do we, as intellectual baddies, go from a #HOTGIRLSUMMER to a #HOTGIRLSEMESTER?? Don’t fret, thankfully Hot Girl Meg has sent us some tips, via Twitter, on how to accomplish a hot girl semester.

First things first:

  • Plan things out! Working with a calendar has no real downsides because everything is laid out the way you make it. Having things planned out or at least written somewhere else can help you remember all your plans. Writing things down in an agenda can decrease stress and anxiety caused by the clutter swirling around in your head. So write it down! When you get your syllabus, take note of when assignments are due and put those in your calendar. Furthermore, fill out when you have classes and events until the last day of the semester. You can get a regular paper agenda if you remember things better when you write them out, but nowadays things are so hectic and everything is electronic so a calendar app may be your best bet. The Google calendar app is a great tool because it syncs up all of your gmail calendars (and your shared ones) and sends alerts in real time to remind you about appointments, classes, events, and assignments. So it doesn’t matter how you do it, but get yourself planned out.

  • Don’t procrastinate! Be proactive and try to tackle, or at least get started on, assignments ahead of time. This will probably be the hardest step of all to follow, but it’s probably the most effective for feeling like you’re at the peak of a #HotGirlSemester. If you need help on starting assignments seek out guidance from other sources on your campus, starting with your professors’ office hours and emails. Professors want you to come to them with any questions regarding anything because they would rather you ask first than never ask or ask too late. Likewise, use your peers and see if anyone would be willing to study or go over certain key terms and concepts with you because I bet you aren’t alone in trying to understand the course material.

  • Get up close and personal! Sitting closer to the front row (or might I dare say, the front row) cuts out distractions you would be able to see if you sat in the back of the classroom. Sitting in the front helps you focus on the course material, the board and the lecturer with much more ease. Also as tempting as it much be, try not to browse meaningless websites on your laptop during lecture. That sale, show, or funny kitten picture can wait an hour or two until class is over. Plus if it’s not contributing to your education, then why give it any attention? It’s a distraction for yourself, the people around you and, believe it or not, the professor because they can tell whether or not you are engaged with the course. So pay attention because you might hear something you didn’t even know you needed to hear that would be essential to a successful #HotGirlSemester.

  • Put some effort into your outfit every now and then! Even dressing up business casual a couple times a month can boost your self-esteem surrounding professional adequacy. This goes along the same line as dress to impress, but it takes a deeper dive to make you feel better about yourself. If you think you look like a million bucks then you might in fact start to feel like a million bucks. This feeling will radiate into other aspects of your life causing a ripple of positive boss vibes all over.

Finally, here are some other steps that will help you stay on track to having a successful #HotGirlSemester:

  • Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate! I cannot stress this enough. We don’t consume as much water as we need to on a daily basis, which causes extreme feelings of fatigue, headaches, acne breakouts, muscle cramps, lightheadedness, dry mouth and other uncomfortable symptoms. Don’t wait ‘til you’re thirsty to drink water, sip throughout the day. Getting 8 cups (per 150 lbs) of water daily can get rid of these symptoms and give us better skin, nails, hair, motivation, range of motion, sleep, energy, and brain power.

  • Rest and Relaxation! Sleep gives your body and mind the time it needs to recuperate and maintain a healthy body and weight. Getting enough sleep improves retention and increases your ability to focus, and reduces stress and anxiety while improving your muscle coordination. Taking that time to just be quiet will give your mind the break it needs to balance out your motivated #HotGirl vibes with your relaxed #HotGirl vibes.

  • Get Active and Stay Active! This may seem like a reverse of rest and relaxation but being regularly active also gives you powerful benefits, such as increased energy and motivation levels, improved muscle coordination, a healthy immune system and a healthy mood stabilizer.

The  most important thing to take away from this semester life lesson is that it’s okay if things don’t go as planned. Like our heavenly angel Aaaliyah once said, “just dust yourself off and try again”. Once you’ve practiced that forgiveness it’s easier to tap into your motivation and get back on the horse (or stallion for this matter) and continue to be a #HotGirl. Consistency is key. One thing’s for sure, I know I can use these steps because she even uses these tactics while being a full-time student at Texas Southern University and a full-time rapper/entertainer. So if sis can do all of that then I know we can!
