A guide to the perfect friendsgiving

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Colgate chapter.

So you’ve volunteered to host this year’s Friendsgiving. That’s a daunting task, as this holiday is one of the most hectic out there. Whether this is a pre-Thanksgiving dinner or a gathering of your friends on the day of, you want to be sure this is a holiday they don’t forget! Here are three important things to consider when planning a perfect Friendsgiving.

Assign meals

The most important part of any Friendsgiving is the food. As the host, generally, it’s your duty to tackle the turkey. If you feel that you can’t do it alone, ask a friend to come early to give a helping hand! From there, have each of your friends choose a meal to bring (TIP: To make your life easier, create a spreadsheet with the types of food everyone would like to eat and have your friends sign up from there). Since the best part of Thanksgiving is the leftovers, it’s better to have more food than not enough!.

Be inclusive

Cooking isn’t everyone’s forte, we all have those friends who could catch water on fire (I know I do), but we still want to be sure they feel included. Assign them drinks or cute decorations to bring so they still feel like they’re contributing (without accidentally giving someone food poisoning). The point of Friendsgiving is to spend time with your friends, and you want to be sure they feel a part of that!

Also, don’t forget about your friends with dietary restrictions. Send a text beforehand to get a list of restrictions, and make sure everyone’s recipes are inclusive. (Serve vegan turkey or baked tofu as a supplement for the classic turkey dinner!)

Decorations

Part of the Friendsgiving fun is the ambiance of the holiday. Add light-up leaves or cute pumpkins to your table to encapsulate that fall feel. Garlands around the room could also add a nice touch, or even a cute turkey on your porch. To create a delicious aroma, have a fall simmer pot going on your stove all day. Trust me, your house will smell absolutely mouthwatering the second your guests walk through the door!

Now that you have the basics for a flawless Friendsgiving, you can make this one the best gathering yet. Enjoy spending time with your friends as you give thanks for the joy you bring to each other’s lives!
