A couple of weeks ago, Big Bootie Mix 18 by Two Friends came out. Big Bootie Mixes, if you are not familiar, are hour long mashups of popular songs both from this year, but also from years past. Here is my review.
Big Bootie Mixes are, in my opinion, great for exercise. I am not completely sure what else they are great for. I imagine playing one at a party would leave the partiers a bit upset because you only get small snippets of each song–not really adequate to sing along. However, for background music, or for general hype up music, these mixes, and Big Bootie 18 in particular, are great.
The song choices were quite good. I particularly liked the throwback songs that were featured–the whole track starts with Baba O’Riley by the Who. This intro was unexpected, but decidedly hype. Upon examining the song list (found here: https://www.1001tracklists.com/tracklist/9l2wdv1/two-friends-big-bootie-mix-018-2020-10-26.html) , I noticed that many of the songs featured were in fact remixes of the original songs, which makes me wonder–of the instrumental music breaks, how many were fully composed by Two Friends?
Big Bootie 18 also played on key memes from the past few months. With adding in Tik Tok sounds, as well as songs that went viral on Tik Tok, Big Bootie 18 brought in humor as an added bonus. Interestingly, some of these memes and songs were used as sound effects–whether this added or detract from the humor of it, I leave up to you.
Ultimately, I think the power of the Big Bootie Mixes comes from the ability to mash so many songs together seemingly seamlessly, despite the variance in key, genre, etc. Right next to classic EDM songs are 80s rock songs. Right next to those are pop songs and 2000s classics. This was flawless in Big Bootie 18.
Overall, Big Bootie 18 is typical of the Big Bootie Mixes. It was solid, but not life changing. I recommend if you want some music for exercise, hyping up your friends, or perhaps going on a walk. Enjoy.
