Sustainability is super important–our climate is changing and we should do everything we can to decrease our personal carbon footprint and be as environmentally friendly as possible. It is a little tough to do so in college, so here are some tips!

1. Eat less meat:

Meat production is a hugely wasteful industry so eating less meat would be significantly more sustainable. Last semester, I would choose 3 days a week to be vegetarian–it is pretty easy with all of the dining options, and would helped me feel a lot healthier too, which was an added bonus!

2. Use the clamshell takeout containers:

Frank’s clamshell containers are a super easy way to be more environmentally conscious. They do all the work for you and create much less trash! Bonus points if you bring your own reusable utensils to the dining hall :)

3. Ride the cruiser or take the time to walk:

Avoiding the use of personal cars is a great way to decrease your carbon footprint. The cruisers will be running regardless, so take advantage! Also, taking a walk is a great way to get a bit of exercise while you are at it!

4. Clothing swap with your friends:

So many of us find ourselves staring into into our closets (or armoires ;)) and deciding there is nothing to wear. Instead of ordering clothes online, try a clothing swap with your friends! Go through your closet and whatever you don’t like, let your friends decide if they want it! This way, you can freshen up your wardrobe without spending money or contributing to fast fashion.

5. Use a reusable water bottle:

This one is pretty self explanatory. Reusable water bottle = less single use plastic bottles being thrown away. They have some great options at the bookstore if you are looking for one!

I am a sophomore at Colgate University double majoring in Sociology and History. I love reading, the outdoors, movie nights, and hanging out with my friends in my free time!
