When I was entering my first year of college there were A LOT of things I wish I knew. Moving away from home is a big deal, obviously, and there’s nothing better than receiving advice from people who have gone through it ALL. So I compiled a list of the 5 biggest things I wish I knew before coming to college!
1. Homesickness is REAL
I was definitely homesick the first few weeks of college and felt like no one else was because of what people were posting on social media. But what I have realized is that 1. No one posts a picture of them being sad on Instagram and 2. Other people feel homesick too! You are definitely not alone if you miss your mom and you just want to cuddle in your bed with your dog.
2. Prepare for the coldÂ
I love fashion and I thought I was going to have to sacrifice what I love to wear because of the cold, but layering is key! I also learned how to adapt my style so that I wear clothes I’m comfortable in and warm.Â
3. You don’t have to join everythingÂ
The activities fair can be overwhelming with everyone holding signs saying:Â join my club! Sign up for this! But it is okay to take a breath and just r e l a x. You have four years in college and there is no need to rush to try everything!
4. Take the classes you are curious aboutÂ
You definitely do not want to graduate and feel like you missed out by not taking that basic acting class that you were curious about, but felt too scared to perform in front of people. College is about trying new things and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone. So take the classes that interest you!
5. Career services is not just for seniors!
Don’t be that person that walks into career services for the first time your senior year and totally not understand what’s going on. Expect some curious looks if you’re asking how to get your resume certified by the time you’re a senior. The staff in career service encourages students to come see them as early as their freshman year! The more you make appointments and become a friendly face, the easier it is for them to help you find the job of your dreams.
